I had to take a peek at the reviews on the Cascade, and I laugh when they tell the poster that they are sorry, so this step and that step. ect. then they say things like, "Make sure to run dishwasher when no other water is being used (showers, grass watering, washing machine). " The dishwasher don't use the water pressure to wash dishes.

I switched to Finish (Electrasol) years ago. Performed well during the phosphate years and I was wondering what I would replace it with when the phosphates went away (I also loved the bleach smell, but I grew up with Cascade when it smelled like Comet). No need to worry....the new Finish powder does great and leaves my glasses "squeaky" clean, even in a water police approved dishwasher (last of the real Maytags). I do pour about an extra teaspoon of Finish on the door liner after I have filled both cups because the prewash cup seems very small....

An added mix to these comparisons is that a powder product has a shelf live ide to settling and humidity too. Thus when one runs of Hillbilly #3 with Phosphates from 2007, stuff Mayberry #5 "less good" bought today brand new in 2011 can be better that the old stash.
Soaps, Tires, Erasers "age"
A box of Cascade, Finish or Acme left open here absorbs the local humidity and tends to cake and not work as well.
Even more bizzare is on Yahoo today a link said liquid Bleach has a life of 1/2 year, which I thought was very odd.

I was never a fan of tabs because you cannot use them in the pre-wash and you cannot adjust the dosage, but I guess my dw doesn't care because I am getting good results with just the tab in the main wash cup. The pre wash on my machine using the sensor cycle lasts 13 minutes and the water is not heated so the machine basically has cold to cool water so I guess detergent added isn't going to do much anyway.
There are some cycles that use a longer pre-wash of about 25 minutes and the water is heated steamy hot, so when I use those cycles I will add Finish powder to the pre-wash cup and a tab to the main wash cup.

I know that on my Miele, you set the type of detergent that is being used 1)powder 2)gel 3)tabs. The dishwasher will alter cycles to accommodate the type of detergent. What changes? I don't really know. Miele prefers that you use powders over the others so that is what I have been doing. Maybe the tabs setting moves time from the prewash to the main wash for the best use of time with the tab.

Question on the Finish Powder - the only versions I have seen are either Lemon or Orange. I seem to recall that we shouldn't be using lemon or orange type detergents because they are harsher on glasses or something like that. As I said, I can't quite remember, and since I have never been a lemon or orange fan for dishwasher powders, it hasn't mattered. Can anyone clear that up?

It's just a lemon or orange fragrance,there's no real lemon juice in it like Sunlight used to have,should be no problemo!

I don't care for cleaning or other products that have any type of citrus scent but I have the lemon Finish powder and we are not talking about P&G over the top fragrance that flies into the room while the Dw is running. If anything you can hardly smell it in the box and there is no scent on the dishes after they are clean. - One of the reasons I like the Finish and jet-dry products--little to no after scent. I don't think there will be any increased harshness to the glasses or dishes as a result of the scent...now days everything is all fake anyway..

Well, I was using Cascade and bought a New Finish Powder and WOW. Right back to Sparkling Glasses, Flatware, and Plates without Drying Agent. Works Great in all my machines. Thank God something has changed for the better !!!

This Finish powder is making glassware and silver shine SO MUCH MORE I think,due to the fact that it does not have coating agents in it like Shine Shield that leaves things "filmy". I cannot stress how MUCH better this stuff is. Now, being the phosphate junkie that I am, I may order some STPP from The Chemistry Store just to see if we can do even better! BTW,some Finish formulas do have shine shield type ingredients in them, but this powder does not!

The current Finish/Electrasol powder is a different formulation than the previous which I still have. The previous relied on Chlorine bleach which worked, but not always. This current formulation has no Chlorine bleach and no phosphates but contains enzymes just like the tabs. Maybe not be as effective as tabs with rinse aid formulation, but please note that even if you use a tab with rinse aid "shine" the box may say that you still need to use a separate rinse aid.
So this Finish without phosphates that most of us are talking about is a new formula.... that seems to work very well.

Friday night I had brats and baked beans. Brats was done on a broiler pan and was burnt grease on it and dried on beans in the pan.. - came out clean!
Yesterday, was my 40th b-day party, and we had two small roaster pan and worst of all the two crock pot that has the dried on chili/grape sauce for the meat balls and mini links. -That as well came out clean!

we have just been using whatever was cheap at the time. And if this will make my Kitchenaid Imperial Selectra 21 clean better then it already does, then I think I have found myself a new daily. I will have to pick up a box of the powder here this week.

picked up a box of the powder last night, and I cant say I noticed much of a difference really. But, I plan on loading it up this weekend with some very dirty dishes, and we will see how it does!!!
