Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

forgot to mention

that i did put a new washer on the fill hose fitting.

gonna wheel it over to the sink here in a few minutes and hook it up and see if there are any leaks around the fill solonoid area.

i have a hunch it is going to leak around this female fitting, i see some evidence of leakage here.

if not i will run it thru a cycle!

we shall see here!

okay time to hook it up at the sink

and see what it does!

thanks for reading and also thanks again to everyone who gave me those warm words of comfort last week when i had to put my dog funky to sleep due to cancer!

i miss her sitting on the couch watching me work on my appliances!

but now duke is the only dog here and he did sit there, actually he laid there and slept while i tinkered with this dishwasher tonite! funkie is probably watching it all from doggie heaven!

thanks again

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no leaks at all around the fill hose or fitting or solonoid!

i ran it thru a cycle and it runs great! doesn't leak a drop anywhere!

and at the beginning of the drying cycle the lid pops open!!!!!!!!! how fun is that!!!!!!!

i also saw that it has a water purge at the end of each drain for about 10 seconds. final drain lacks this.

also i see that the timer dial continuously moves like a clock, not a click at a time like most of my machines. it has a 22 minute washing cycle and a 16 minute drying cycle.

2 rinses, a main wash, 2 after rinses!

the fills are about 63 seconds long and the motor runs in the wash direction during the filling phase.

that's about all the trvia i have on it at this time.

hey circle w, hope ur doin fine! did you get your house done yet? would love to see it sometime. love the kds-16 i got from you last year!

hey retropia, i see you are in ohio too, where at, columbus?

more trivia here

ran it thru a complete cycle with dishes in it.

here is the approx cycle time.

rinse 5 min
drain 1 min

rinse 1 1/2 min
drain i min

wash 5 min
drain 1 min

rise 2 min
drain 1 min

rinse 1 1/2 min
drain 1 min.

pauses between drain and fill/wash are about 10 sec.

lids pops up after about 3 minutes of drying time.

the drying cycle is about 16 min long.

at the end of the drying cycle the timer shuts off until you close the lid again. when you close the lid it automatically advances to the beginning of the wash cycle. no turning of the dial is needed! this is unique!

and i noticed that the

detergent cup is mechanically controlled by the timer dial. it flips over at the wash phase but unlike other machines i have it also flips itself back over, ready for another fill by the end of the cycle. this is also unique, at least to me and all the other machines i have.

here it is 3/4 of the way flipped back at the beginning of the drying cycle.

just love this little machine!

it's my 2nd. impeller machine and only bowtie!

this one has found a home in my kitchen next to my other g.e. mobile maid and my sears lady kenmore roto rack top loader.

i have a thing for top loaders!

to the left of all of them is the flair stove i picked up this past winter. it is sitting on 2 kitchenaid dishwashers, a kd-15 and kd-16. will try to get some pics of the flair on here sometime this summer. it's a beautiful stove.

all in all

a great way to spend a day off! i feel very blessed to have found this little bowtie impeller machine and to have it be in such fine condition!

i won't be using it much, don't want to push my luck here!

thanks again!

forgot to ask!

does anyone here know what year this machine was built?

i would like to know myself and i also told the man i bought it from i would let him know too, he's curious like me. gotta be mid fifties? or am i wrong here?

mike (dishwasher crazy), paul (turquoise dude) you have this machine don't you? bob (appnut) you always know a lot about old dishwashers, any idea please?

Peter, my guess is taht this is one of the last of these. I say this because the rack are white. Every other bow-tie GE I've ever seen, roll-out or mobile maid, had racks that were pinkish/salmon color similar to teh interior walls. Also the utensil rack not only is white, but it's style/design/shape is more reminiscent of the utensil racks found in the "new" spray-arm front load models of the early to mid-1960s. My aunt and grandmother both had the roll-out versions of these from 1958 or 1959 and 1960s and the flatware rack was more elongated and had little opening slots at the end of the basket outside the compartments in which you could hang long-handled utensils and such through the holes. Tomturbomatic was the person which acutally mentioned that one time from when they had theirs, I never knew you could do that but it makes sense. So, I would say anywhere from 1962 to 1964. Bajespuma might have a good idea as to when the spray-arm mobile maids beduted.

Wouldn't mind a blue one like Tom described either!

It's also the first year that these had mechanically controlled detergent cups changed from the magnetically controlled ones.

Your racks are vintage, but they are not original to this model. The OE racks would have been "coral"(bottom rack) and "petal pink"(top rack). The silverware basket might have been the plastic version only "coral" colored or it would have been more likely one of the original pink Plastisol coated wire baskets. They were replaced probably sometime in the late sixties. Our detergent cup, "coral" just like yours, broke off and it was replaced in the late sixties with the same part, only it was white and had a metal edge on the front side.

Does this machine have a "Power-Shower"?

Pete:

GREAT FIND. Congratulations. I agree - since this machine is in such great shape, I certainly would not tear into the motor and its mounting to the tub. Leave it alone.

Yes, I have a 1958 MobileMaid Model SP40S1 (Pink) (S/N ZR7-03623). Videos of it running with Plexiglas are on my YouTube page (link is below - this was my first video and not as good as later ones).

I just looked at my GE Parts pages. The Model SP30 and SP31 pages are dated November 1960.

Thanks for showing all of the photos.

Mike

thanks everyone!

wow, november 1960! just love finding out the production dates on these machines, i was in kindergarden as it was being built. it was election month for john kennedy! mom had just bought our house in norwood we moved into in may 1960! it cost $15,000! marilyn monroe had just finished 'the misfits' her last film. she was divorcing arthur miller at that time.

mike your video is great! i put it in my favorites. your's looks just like mine (almost).

appnut, thanks for the info, that silverware basket trivia is great!

bajaespuma, thanks for the info! mine does not have the power shower feature but 1960 sounds good to me! interesting about the detergent cup too! the golden anniversary line! love it!

that is wild about my racks not being original. to think they replaced racks on this machine means they really cared for it! it just adds to the uniqueness!

this is truly a great find, i'm not bragging, i feel very lucky or blessed to have it come my way! to think it could have ended up in the trash after all those summers on that lake erie island! and i love lake erie after all my years of working at cedar point and living in sandusky! this was meant to be!

another question please! mike you probably know. that baffle thing in the bottom of the tub at center back, behind impeller, stainless steel. it is called a water vane in my g.e. repair manual. what does it do? keep the water from swirling around too much? and why is it needed?

also i checked my g.e. repair master and it lists the model i have in a schematic breakdown as being the 1952-1957 top loading model. i wonder why the dates are wrong here?

not that it matters, you guys answered my question on it's age, i have found these repair master books to be innacurate before. but looking at the schematic i also see it shows the power shower dvice that i don't have on mine either, again not that it matters. this little dishwasher is great just as it is!
