WTH?!?! Anyone see this before on an orbital MT?

Was doing some soaking in my orbital Maytags last night when I noticed one wasn't making the telltail splish-splash noise. It wasn't agitating at all and the agitator seemed awfully tall. So I put the half clothespin into the lid switch, pushed down on the agitator, it engages for 4-5 strokes, popped up and disengaged again. Cancelled thie cycle, drained/spun out the load. I thought the nut had come loose one the shaft, but when I lifted the agitator, the entire shaft came out! Has anyone seen this before? Is there a lock nut at the other end of the shaft?

Hi Peter, NO, after all the Maytag's I have restored and fooled with, NONE, have I ever seen this.  Orbital transmission works the same on the end of the shaft as helical drive machines.  Not sure what is going on with that?  Is that at one of your Wash-A-Teria's?

I've had it happen once.

I replaced the transmission and mounting stem/boot seal. The shaft moving up and down caused the triple lip seal to fail. It is possible to fix this transmission and change the oil.

Not the end of the world by any means.

Yes, at the laundromat. I have 6 orbitals that replaced 6 GE FFs. These were among the last Newton machines. Since I've had them, this is the first major issue I've had with them ever.
