Thats a

1950 51 Kenmore mixer...the one where they tried to copy a Kitchenaid,,,some odd cookware, a Wear Ever springform pan with the tube insert, a stainless Dormeyer bowl, a weird space age looking Fostoria mixer, an extra bowl which also fits a General Mills mixer, Donald found a set of NOEL candleholders and 2 NIB boxes of WT Grants c-9 Christmas lights....The rolling pin I couldnt resist at the auction we went to today...it had a tag on it saying, this belonged to my grandmother...the lady that lived in the house was in her 80s when she passed, so I figured the rolling pin had to be at least 70 or 80 years old..

The main reason//

I bought the mixer is to have an extra bowl and beater for mine, that thing is really powerful...180 watts in 1950 when a Sunbeam was 120!The bowl is plastic!..Kind of a Melmac type thing.

What a Haul!

I wonder if the Kenmore mixer used the same all purpose beater as the KA? The bowl looks way to shallow to contain what that beater moved around, but it is the first time I have seen such an animal. I wonder if there was a lawsuit in the mix. I can't imagine that Sears spent the money to make the strong planetary gear necessary to make that mixer as long-lived as a KA.

The Grants light set NIB is a treasure in so many ways. Are the NOEL letters candle holders?

My brother and I used to call those beans Van Cramps.

Kenmore...

It is NOT a planetary motion machine, the bowl locks on a turntable that has a braking mechanism in it, the bowl turns, but the beater is a similar thing to the KA, it is much more powerful though, made by Birtman electric company, it must have not been very popular, because they are rare today,,of course it sold for 43.95 in 1950!!! thats probably what was not popular!

RE Corning cake pans...

I thought they were too high at 15.00 a pop...but then I looked on ebay!!! I bought them at the Factory Antique mall in Verona Virginia, we went Friday, its about a 3 hour trip, but supposedly the biggest antique mall on the east coast, I wonder if Corning made these in 9 inch????

Wow! The garage and estate sales in this neck of the woods never yield anything close to this - what a haul indeed!!

Hans, the mixer in picture 5 is fascinating - what brand is it?

The Noma tree topper is something else, too - did you (or should I say did Donald) test it yet?

And the Corning cake pans! Oy!!  I've been looking for a set for years - congratulations on your finds!

Hans-- A question and an observation:

1) My admiration grows each time I see that 1960 Kenmore range console! It has my favorite version of the Kenmore logo; the script is so cool. It's the same (no surprise) logo sported by our 1960 Model 80 washer and dryer. And I can't resist a range with an electrical outlet.

2) You mentioned the mixer in photo #5 is a Fostoria. Would that be the same company that made Fostoria dishes (one of which is pictured below)? My mom had a set of 12 of this pattern, plus all the extra serving dishes, goblets, etc.

<span style="font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The only things I found at the 2 estate sales I went to were a snow rake ($10), and an aqua Tupperware flip-top sugar bowl ($1).  There was a complete service for 12 of Homer Laughlin "Celeste" which was marked down to $17.50 today, but I need another set of china like I need a hole in my head. lol  It had several hard to find serving pieces with it as well.</span>

Used books

Hans, when buying used books always put them inside a plastic bag and toss them inside the freezer for a couple of days, or even longer. That way you'll be sure to kill all guest mites and avoid cross-infecting your entire book collection or library!

Mixers

With Sears mixer, the "Achillies heel" is the bowl which is fragile, "Melamine" plastics tend to get brittle with age. Have you ever tried this mixer to make cookie dough? Also how does the beater attach? does it have "nibs" like most two beater mixers? could that beater 'strip" the nibs off when mixing a heavy load? like a fruitcake or cookie dough. One has to wonder about useful capacity? Could one double a standard cake recipe and not have batter flying out the spinning bowl? How effective is the breaking mechanism?

In 1950, a Mixmaster sold for 39.50 and the price included a juicer and two glass bowls.

In 1950, a Mixmaster sold for 39.50

I find that amazing.

The mixmaster was the equivalent of 6 weeks wages when production started in Australia in 1948....Average wages were equivalent to AUD $21.80. So that's well north of AUD$120 or 3 times the cost of the same machine in the US.

However 6 weeks average wages today, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, is approximately $9000!

Re Kenmore..

The beater attaches somewhat like a Sunbeam,a slot in the end of the shaft, the bowl is about 3 quarts, and yep//it will plow thru cookie dough like a knife thru butter.

Kenmore bowl....

The bowl locks onto a turntable that has a geared braking mechanism, it only lets the bowl turn at a slow speed, I will post some detailed pictures.

Baking cake in glass or ceramic "pans"

Baking cakes in heatproof glass or ceramic pans I usually reduce the temperature 25 degrees F. The reduction in temperature & heat retention of the pan allows for a more even rise for the cake. I have baked cake layers using pyrex cake pans for yrs.

Fostoria Mixer

McGraw-Edison was not known for making a very durable mixer. The mixer was featured in an Alden or Spiegal catalog around 1964-1966. Consumer Reports test models failed the durability test.
