Hans, when buying used books always put them inside a plastic bag and toss them inside the freezer for a couple of days, or even longer. That way you'll be sure to kill all guest mites and avoid cross-infecting your entire book collection or library!

Mixers

With Sears mixer, the "Achillies heel" is the bowl which is fragile, "Melamine" plastics tend to get brittle with age. Have you ever tried this mixer to make cookie dough? Also how does the beater attach? does it have "nibs" like most two beater mixers? could that beater 'strip" the nibs off when mixing a heavy load? like a fruitcake or cookie dough. One has to wonder about useful capacity? Could one double a standard cake recipe and not have batter flying out the spinning bowl? How effective is the breaking mechanism?

In 1950, a Mixmaster sold for 39.50 and the price included a juicer and two glass bowls.

I find that amazing.

 

The mixmaster was the equivalent of 6 weeks wages when production started in Australia in 1948....Average wages were equivalent to AUD $21.80. So that's well north of AUD$120 or 3 times the cost of the same machine in the US.

 

However 6 weeks average wages today, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, is approximately $9000!

Re Kenmore..

The beater attaches somewhat like a Sunbeam,a slot in the end of the shaft, the bowl is about 3 quarts, and yep//it will plow thru cookie dough like a knife thru butter.

the Kenmore mixer bowl turns slowly under the beater? Slower than a Mixmaster because of the breaking?

Why did Kelly like those pie plates better than glass?  I always meant to ask him.

Kenmore bowl....

The bowl locks onto a turntable that has a geared braking mechanism, it only lets the bowl turn at a slow speed, I will post some detailed pictures.

Baking cake in glass or ceramic "pans"

Baking cakes in heatproof glass or ceramic pans I usually reduce the temperature 25 degrees F. The reduction in temperature & heat retention of the pan allows for a more even rise for the cake. I have baked cake layers using pyrex cake pans for yrs.

McGraw-Edison was not known for making a very durable mixer. The mixer was featured in an Alden or Spiegal catalog around 1964-1966. Consumer Reports test models failed the durability test.
