YAY!!! I found my dream machine!!!

I almost had given up the idea to find my dream machine but after I got back from the convention I received a mail from a Dutch guy who was at first looking for parts of the machine I was looking for. After he decided to buy a new washer he mailed me and told me I could have this machine if I would pick it up. There was only one problem, namely that the pump was dead. No problem for me, you can still get one. So now I am the proud owner of a Philips AWB119, an H-axis toploader, the type of machine as some of you already know is my favourite.

I took a few pictures with a very cheap digital camera, so sometimes the quality is not that great (some pictures are a bit cranked) but you get the idea.

Under the lid there are two other lids. One for the drum and one for the detergent dispenser.

Louis I can't tell you how happy I am for you. Boy is this exciting! Finding a dream machine like that doesn't happen too often that's for sure. It looks like a really neat machine, very thin too and in great shape.

How about cutting some plexiglas in the shape of the opening indent at the top of the washer and having some pictures and video???? We would love to see what is going on inside there.

Have you ever seen or used one of these Phillips to loaders before. Was in made in the Netherlands?

Congratulations on finding your dream machine, thats what happens when you wait long enough...will it be fully installed in the bathroom...stupid question really...of course it will!!!...

I love these machines for their flexibility, variable Time, Temperature and Spin Speed, of course the double bearing either side of the drum meant they just kept on going and on like yours.This must be 1980`s made. Is your Hot & Cold fill??

This was the first range of Top Loaders that I sold when I was a salesman at Trident....Philips was really ramping up the sales volume in the UK, had demonstrators in every store , mega incentives for sales staff...

Models AWB119 =1000rpm de-luxe & AWB103= 800rpm., and front loaders, AWB082, AWB096 & AWB098 ...

p.s. this was the golden era of washing machines in the UK. Servis Slimlines & Selectronic, Hoover 1100 rpm new models, Hotpoint 15690 & 18580 with the famous purple controls. Also the last Hoover Keymatic was made this year...Oohhh it`s takin me back...

Geoff, yes, you can very easily push in the lidswitch (left from the softener dispenser, not in the pictures) you don't even have to hold it down. Then you can open the inner lid and see how the drum turns. Ofcourse it is impossible to see the clothes tumble, this type of washer isn't big in washer drama.

Robert, I know this machine very well. I bought this same model new in 1982, mine was one of the last models, the production of this line was discontinued in that year. I used my machine until 1993 when the thermostat broke down. Because the repair was rather expensive I bought a new washer but regretted later that I got rid of the Philips.

This machine was made in France, Philips sold it's white goods division later to Whirlpool. They still make toploaders, but very different ones.

Mike, these machines do bring memories back for those in the appliances business. This machine is cold fill only.

Some more specifications: The spin speed of the AWB119 is 120 - 850. It has a Permanent Magnet motor, that draws max. 950 Watts. The heating element is only 2000 Watts. And it pauses now and then for tumbling a few revolutions. After the heating period it starts really washing. This was a 220V machine that could be used on a 10Amps fuse. It only starts to spin when the drum is full of water, in that way it compensates the lack of weight, the machine is only 59kg. This machine came with a lot of documentation, I still have to go through it and will tell more about that tomorrow.

Thanks guys, sharing this with other washer afficionados makes the pleasure even bigger!

I got all the documentation of this machine with it. The manual, the receipts and the repair bills.

The machine was bought on July 27th 1982 and delivered on August 2nd. So this machine is from the same year as the one I bought new in that 1982.

In the beginning this was quite a troublesome machine. Only two weeks after the delivery (August 16th) the thermostat was replaced. Three days later the repair man was there again and replaced the timer. Six months later there were troubles with the lid lock. It doesn't say if the lock was replaced or not. So that was the third repair in six months. The last (documented) repair was done on Sept. 25th 1984, the machine got new bearings and everything was checked. That is the last documentation about this washer. However when I opened the little trap door on the bottom front I noticed the pump looks different than on my old one. I don't know if just the small lid was replaced or the whole pump.
