Hi everyone, I’m currently restoring a Maytag wringer washer and would appreciate any advice or tips from those who’ve worked on these before.

No, it’s not running at the moment. I’m in the process of rebuilding the washer and redoing the wringer. We bought it a couple summers ago.the thing started smoking and sparking last summer.IMG_0577.jpegIMG_0576.jpegIMG_0578.jpeg
Were here to help..
Can u share pics of machine?
Is it functional now ?
What’s the story?

It doesn’t appear to be a bluebell. Unless it’s been painted over.
Dose the tub hold water? Any leaking onto the motor. Where was the spark’s coming from? Cord or motor ?
The most common problems with these machines is the index slide in the wringer (easy fix) that part holds or locks the wringer in place when locking wringer in position. If the agitator post seal leaks..water can get into the gear box (power unit) and if bad enough will cause oil to drip down left back leg or out of a weep hole on the cross bar. If the tub seal gasket is leaking, water could drip onto motor
Sparking has me thinking of bad electric connections or possibly of a bad electric motor. Possibly serviceable, repairable or replaceable.
I don’t see a lever in the pics so I’m assuming it’s wasn’t a pump model but gravity drain.
I see Gulmite bolts. You may need a Gulmite wrench to turn those if you’re going that far..don’t go that far if you don’t have to. LOL

The tub does hold water. I did find a hole in the gravity-drain hose, so I still need to pick up a new hose for that. The transmission area is really oily and greasy underneath—should I be concerned about that?

Water is heavier than oil. So if the agitator shaft seal is failing and letting too much water thru, it will get into the gearbox. In turn the oil in the gear box will float up and out of the fill hole dripping down underneath. If you go to the top of the Wringer Washer FB group page there is a "Files" button there at top right, left click on that and you will find info and links to more info and manuals for your Maytag.
