The Maytag Neptune TL: The Washer that Caused Maytag’s Death

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Are your refrigerator and microwave oven in need of replacement?
No, those are the two original appliances my house came with that luckily are still working...

However, I will not be as able to find a great refrigerator like that one--it is most-perfectly designed and even has a name-plate, not the name on the door...

As for the microwave, it's an over-the-range model that will be hard to remove and install a new one of...

That would be nice to have a Samsung of and with a blue LED display to match my newer range's of below, in stead of the old green one...

In regards to Maytag's demise: When you take Gub'mint regulations imposed by bureaucrats who know nothing about real world problems, and combine it with with Maytag Inc. bean counters, designing machines by cutting costs, you get DEATH. Olde Maytag, it was good to know ye, and I treasure my 23 year old Atlantis.

Today, I’m going to be discussing one of the worst washers ever, the top loading Neptune. Extremely rare to find one working these days because most broke down years ago.

It had so many mechanical problems and it was notorious for tying clothes into knots. Common failures included the motor, transmission, and control board.

The transmission used on those was also plastic I heard, and the design caused mold to build up in the washer. It was like a top load washer replicating a front loader.

Video of someone with issues with Neptune TL (note: NOT Whirlpool made).

This is one of the reasons why Maytag had to be bought by Whirlpool, I heard they were actually sued for making this extremely poor design.

The Whirlpool built Maytags are much better than the TL Neptune (even the new new ones).
Maybe I have the last working Maytag TL. I'm not sure it is a Maytag design, It was manufactured in Florence (Italy)? It is still manufactured as I've seen it without the Maytag name on it. In any case the machine is very effective at producing clean laundry. See Consumer Reports. Colors / Jeans doesn't spin at a high speed and the clothing releases easily. To me it is a fun machine,20171008_NeptuneTL.jpg

Maytag Neptune top load washers

This was a Maytag design that they can see and built in the Norge plant, it was very effective at cleaning. In fact it got the highest rating in consumer reports the one time they tested it.

It was not well liked by consumers because of the severe tangling problems. A lot of them were returned.

It was also rushed to market. It had a lot of glitches in it however it was cool truly cool machine. I have one that’s still working one of the digital touchscreen models for the museum. My brother has the less expensive model that still works fine neither get used much

Did not know they were still being made somewhere, I thought I heard at one point the design was sold to accompany in China and they were made for a while, but never saw any confirmation on either one of these scores. Maybe someone else knows.

I pulled a few posts.

If you'd like to discuss politics, then I would suggest the Dirty Laundry forum.

Thanks all!
Since I’ve been on here for over 8 years, I honestly think it’s time for the DL forum index to go bye bye. Even though it’s a private forum index, it has a tendency of ‘overflowing’ onto the rest of the site.

The Neptune TL was Maytag's own design as combo52 said.

It was made by Maytag in Florence South Carolina, not Florence Italy. The Florence SC plant was formerly the Amana/Caloric range plant which Maytag took ownership of in 2001 when they bought Amana. In late 2003, Maytag discontinued the Amana-built range lineup (in favor of slapping the Amana badge onto Magic Chef ranges). They then completely retooled the Florence plant from a cooking plant to a laundry plant, in order to build the Neptune TL washer which launched at that time. This was the only product made in that plant for the rest of its existence. Maytag closed the Florence plant and discontinued the Neptune TL washer in early 2006, shortly before Whirlpool took control of the company.

Haier then bought the patent for the Neptune TL from Whirlpool/Maytag and relaunched their own made-in-China version. I don't think their attempt was long lived either: https://appliancist.com/laundry/washers_dryers/haier-top-load-washing-machine.html

I vaguely recall seeing an Amana?-branded version years ago.
I don't remember seeing an Amana version of the Neptune TL, however, you may be thinking of the Amana Enlighten which was a rebadge of the standard front load Neptune, but reused the control panel styling from the Neptune TL: https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/NAH6800AWW.html
