Got an early 1950's Hotpoint double oven range

Here is a new range I got from a thrift store today for $40.00. Appears to be top of the line...two ovens, clock and seperate timer. I looked at the wiring and it all looks good, even looks like some recent repairs were done. Getting into the kitchen may be a little tough though, this thing is...

The end of Kodachrome super 8

I have a collection of 16mm films and I was amazed that most have very good color...these must be Kodachrome. Whatever was used in the late 60's through the 80's seemed to always turn pink.

What are your favorite American iconic products?

Push Button Transmission The push buttons are great! Here's one from a 1964 Plymouth Savoy. (Last year they were installed on Chryslers). Edsel's had a push button transmission with the buttons in the center of the steering wheel. Some of the latest school buses use an Allison automatic with...

    Old dehumidifers worth fixing?

Sometimes just adding oil will not cure the problem...I have had success with small motors by disassembling and thoroughly cleaning the bearings and then re-lubricating. Just adding oil will not remove accumulated gummy grease from the bearings. There is not much torque from fan motors so they...

    Reverse Idler Question.

Rubber rejuvenating often is temporary...a new part would be best. Search on "rubber rejuvenator" as there are products designed specifically for this like from PRB that are worth a try.

    Shipping/Freight Carriers Question

I would only use a professional moving or freight company such as Allied Van lines, etc. Good reliable shipping is not cheap. Make sure you can track the shipment enroute.

    GE Portacolor TV's $249.99 and 25 pounds!

I don't think Sylvania exists anymore except in name...the last production "Sylvania" U.S. made tubes from the 80's are branded Philips ECG. Do you have any more information on the Sylvania 7868's?

    GE Portacolor TV's $249.99 and 25 pounds!

Some of the later 25" GE sets had lead encased HV rectifier tubes to protect against X-rays. The tube is very heavy (3DB3)? There are fortunately a lot more "new" tubes being made, thank goodness for us in the Jukebox repair business. Several types of tubes used in many types of jukes such as...

So what are you doing to conserve energy during this heat wave????

This last month (July) the electric bill was $360 or so...in June it was only about $198. Will have to see if the rate per KWH increased. I used to have a system to power my household electrical needs off of an inverter...I used 2 car batteries in the trunk of the Grand Marquis with a range...

    Symphonique record player help.....

Also, as much as possible of the old gummy grease should be removed with a solvent such as isopropyl alcohol, etc. before re-lubricating.

    They made air conditioners too?

Actually I guess my unit is a "Sears Coldspot" not "Kenmore"...its from the late 60's early 70's. It was left in the barn by previous owners and worked great for 5 yrs. Just recently it developed the problem. Thought it was bad motor bearings but oiled them and that was not it.

    They made air conditioners too?

They were still using the Chrysler Airtemp window units at Ohio University in Athens as late as 1999. They were in some of the early 1800's era buildings on the College Green. I remember they had the Chrysler pentastar medallion on the outside. I am missing my 22,000 BTU Kenmore window...

"Who Killed The Electric Car" The movie..

About theatres, there are still a lot of towns in New Mexico which have the old downtown theatres running, some still with carbons. Lovington, Artesia, and Santa Rosa come to mind. I think the one in Artesia was only 50 cents or a dollar. There are also many small towns in NM (and some in TX)...

"Who Killed The Electric Car" The movie..

I agree about the durability of the Town Cars/Grand Marquises. The gas mileage is very good for all of the car you get...I get at least 20 MPG from my 302 multi-port fuel injected engine 1990 model, and my 1978 is still going strong with more than 250,000 miles. I bought the '90 for $625 and the...

    Check out my drawers

I wonder if I'm the only one here who doesn't have central heating/AC? My house originally used unvented gas heaters in the rooms but now I use the much safer electric radiators when heat is needed. AC is from window units. There was never any kind of central furnace installed. To me it would...

    I get hooked up tomorrow!

Jason, do you have any wireless providers in your area? I live in a pretty remote area, no DSL or cable available but there is a wireless ISP here too with a transmitter on a local radio tower: I use it and speed is better than DSL. I have a flat panel antenna mounted on mast outside to receive...

Show me yours......I'll show you mine.....

Here is my 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis, with 8-track player. Has over 250,000 miles, original engine and transmission...still drive it to and work 60 miles almost every day (sometimes I drive my Dodge 1-ton van). 400 CID V-8...gets about 16 MPG which I think is pretty good for what it is!

anyone now how to fix or where to ...............

Also...modern fans have a thermal fuse in the motor that opens if it overheats but oftentimes old ones did not...this can lead to the motor burning up as people have said. I would not leave this fan unattended as there is no thermal or overload protection.
