    Old Westy Gas Dryer

The electrical code changed roughly about 1947 so it required new houses to have two hots; ie what was called then 220 or 230 volt service; before WW2 many houses only had 110 volt service. The Westy 1947 dryer my dad bought new was for 110 volt service only, its total heat output was like a...

    Those "energy hog" fridges....

RE "The most modern energy saving designs will not kick in the automatic defrost cycle according to a timer, but rather when the system senses an ice buildup on the coils (not sure how they do that). Modern compressors are more energy efficient than older ones, as well." The GE unit here has a...

    Those "energy hog" fridges....

The Most Energy Efficient Refrigerators, 2011 Edition RE "It consumed 11.62 kwh of power over 360 hours. At our current rate, it cost us $0.91 for the first half of the month and a projected monthly cost of $1.82! Those are the cold, hard numbers. I can't imagine a new energy efficient "green"...

Monitoring laundry detergent performance and use

What really matters is your "stuff gets clean enough" for your criteria. Dwelling on the suds as being a factor is really wonky. One can have a super super short wash cycle with massive suds and the ones stuff may not be all washed. One can drop a greasy pair of blue jeans in a 5 gallon...

All this Westy talk got me thinking...

Check if door switch is working WOW; many nice images of a rebuild! Here with 1976 westy pairs the lower panels repainting on one had a tiny piece of paint foul the door switch; even when it was masked twice. Thus on the washer I bought a new door switch. In the usa the westy dryers I have...

Round Idler pulley looks oval when machin is on! :) arbilab (DFW metro) ; the round idler when the machine is on looks non round ! Its center of rotation is translating back and forth too. Thus the eye sort of makes the blur be really oval shaped! The idler pulley is spring loaded by two...

Here with 3 decades of usage the green HUB wore thinner; thus was replaced. If too thin the LGS spring has little axial space/clearance and it can be trapped. The LGS spring in the last image looks boogered up if one looks closely. Its mid coils look like their outer diameter is smaller...

Potato Pulley The "potato pulley" makes the wash rpm vary in rpm. It is more than an offset circle, the pulley is not round. The AC 1800 rpm induction motor is always driving the idler pulley; which is always revolving the potato pulley. The potato pulley may or may not be driving the basket...

So...I wonder if the 12 minute rapid cycle on the Russell hobbs can wash the egg off their faces?

A better system would to have the government publish the test data for both water and electricity: (A)Thus TL washer A that costs 300 might use 30 gallons and cost 16 dollars per year in electricity and a cycle is 40 minutes (b) Thus FL washer B might cost 600 and use 13 gallons and cost 14...

RONIC; RE "I'm not sure about Europe, but I can tell you that it isn't the manufacturers here that get rewarded. We can still buy old style top loaders if we want them...but consumers generally get a rebate from their council if they buy a machine that is rated at 4 star or better for water...

Some people must be outta their mind's

A 1955 chevy was once just an old out of style car worth lit When I lived in the auto capital of the USA in the mid 1960's; one got laughed at if one drove a 1955 Chevy. At country fairs they had them as junkers where one paid 25 cents to hit them with sledge hammers for charity; raising...

Not everybody is just treading water money wise like you and me. I know a few folks who have so much money that they are always bored. Heck they might be in the dog house with the wife since they sold that old stove eons ago. Paying a few grand to them is like 20 bucks to normal folks...

Here is a PDF from Gates on belts and heat. Primary reason of heat is belt slipping. Check too if you have oil on those pulleys. Run the machine and stop and pull the plug. If the belt is not too hot one should be able to touch it if for several seconds see page (2) in PDF...

So in Europe do the government(s) reward washer makers with a huge Corporate tax break when a washer is sold that meets low water levels of consumption? Here it is several hundred US dollars per machine. Sometimes there is an extra 100 by the states too via a federal short term backed program...
