    One Button Does the Wash

I really find ... ... the ingenuity of electro-mechanical appliances to be much more impressive and ahead of their time than anything that involves a microchip.

    Old heating stuff

My apartment building ... ... was built in 1920. Still using the original boiler, which looks like a steam ship impossibly buried in an underground cavern!

    Wash Your Towels.

Agreed, Matt! Couldn't have said it better myself. The "big" towel in the bathroom lasts a week. Washcloths once per use (I can't imagine showering without one; you don't get as clean simply lathering with bare hands, as you need the friction from a good terry washcloth -- not too plush and...

    Only $50 each

WOW! Mom's washer exactly. She just got it serviced ... took 12 minutes and a $2.75 part. The guy who serviced it is the son of the man who sold it to her in 1983. He told her to never get rid of it -- she'll never find that kind of quality again.

New Use for Vintage Stove ...

From none other than a website called "dudecraft.com" ... http://www.dudecraft.com/2011/01/oven-lounge.html

    Vintage GE kitchen

Hmmm ... ... Maybe those photos are off a bit, but that's not REALLY the classic "harvest gold". Harvest gold is deeper and more yellow. This appears to be that awkward transition color that preceded the dreaded ... ALMOND. [this post was last edited: 10/27/2014-07:38]

    Big Money on Cape Cod

And ... ... she readily admits that "new" ones go for $260. So she's asking $300 for her broken one. And why does one photo show the machine with the Hoover badge, and the other without?

    Bounce Sheets with "Manly" Scent

Ugh ... I hate following some fool in the laundry room who's used these stenched-up laundry products in the machines I'm using. It's so strong the residue is picked up on my own clothes and bed linens, and for the next week I have to endure it.

Why I dislike detergent pods - stuck in Miele door seal!

I think ... ... this is more a problem with the design of front-loading washers than with laundry pods (although I'm a purist and prefer measuring my own detergent anyway).

THIS HAS TOTALLY FREAKED ME OUT

Interesting ... ... that they apparently sent an intern to report the story.

    GE 1955 side open lid!

I have always been a fan ... ... of the side-opening lids. I like leaving the lid open, loading in clothes and soap as the drum fills with water, AND having full access to the control panel, rather than having it hidden behind the open lid. This is a photo of the same model my mom had when I...

What is your Favorite Detergent/Cleaner Scent?

This is kind of gross but ... ... living in New York City, I'm paranoid about bugs. Cockroaches in particular. And bedbugs. And since discovering that one of the most effective bedbug (and even cockroach) repellants is lavender oil, I've been using only "natural" laundry detergent that...

    Out with the red...

GORGEOUS GORGEOUS GORGEOUS!! I'm a big fan of Peekskill, too!! Frankly, I think I've had my fill of Manhattan.

Cold/Flu Season: What's your secret weapon?

I NEVER ... ... get flu shots. EVER. I've never had a flu shot and never had the flu. I rarely get colds, either. I attribute this to eating clean (only real, natural, "whole" foods), and getting plenty of sleep (at least 8 hours a night). I also take a high quality plant-based vitamin...

The great Lightbulb conspiracy of 1920s and its legacy

And we STILL have planned obsolescence ... ... with those dreadful CFLs that claim to last 15 years. Funny how they seem to die even sooner than the old incandescents ...

    American Kitchens Musings:

Formica ... "I remember my mother specifying Formica for the counters. Other kitchens had linoleum countertops. Maybe these were similar. They certainly would be cushioned and far kinder to things than granite has shown itself to be in today's kitchens." We have a quartz countertop in the...
