Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I used a springy piece of stainless which was mounted between the calipers and brake pads on a friend's Toyota. He didn't keep them after a brake job he did in my garage so I found them and I cut one to fit under the plastic tab so it pushes up on it. Now, you have to press quite hard on the tab to remove the filter and there's no way it could come off by itself!

Bill---you are correct

Bill---the last page right above--says to hold the tub in place for the first minute of 2 spin cycles to burnish or burn in the brake----entirely correct, it now stops in about 7 seconds, many thanks.

This machine is AMAZING!! Incredible turnover, fantastic rinses---both spray and deep rinse----steady spin when fully loaded. Maybe a slight water hog with that long spray, but since it really does 18 pounds and they are clean and rinsed clear, I think it's worth it for sure. And my various springs worked well, but I surely do have to exactly level it with those nylon legs, it's one active machine.

Ancient memory from 73 to 79 with Mom's green 1-18, the only difference I recall is that her water level switch showed a diagram of the agitator, other than that no difference I can recall, so I am very nostalgically happy with this workhorse. With 7 kids in the house, Mom would have told Dad to buy the BIGGEST 2 speed available and she would not have cared about any frills or extras.

Bill--thanks again and you didn't know what a gem you had! And tell Kenny Goatfarmer he did a great job in saving this from a crusher at Menards.

I'll run it about 3 more weeks until my Whirlpool gets returned from the theatre, then another teardown to finalize everything:

1)Another attempt at that bottom seal(about 3 cups of water lost during fill only, and ALL caught by my jerry-rigged hose and led out of the machine neatly. Frankly, with my deep sump floor drain about 8 inches away, it won't be the end of usage if the leak is beyond my ability)

2) Got the filter via Ebay, but the rail is 2 weeks out on backorder. The fabric softener dispenser is great.

3) I found 2 wire retainer clips after re-assembly(oops)

4) Cover gasket(she leaks at top rim at start of spin---maybe press-seal foam and some epoxy when I'm pretty damn sure it's the last teardown)

5) Kickplates of stainless steel or aluminum around bottom 3 inches( I totally ridded her of rust, then 2 coats of Rustoleum and 2 topcoats of Krylon already done)

6) Small dent in the console aluminum, I should be able to gently pry it back in better shape

On all of my other automatics, I have wired in a "timer kill" switch. On the Filter-Flo, I kill the timer to allow more spin prior to spray, letting it get up to speed. On the Maytag, more deep rinse time. On the Whirlpool, more spray time. This may be the first machine where I am quite impressed enough by its own exact timer operation that I do not put in that kill switch.

Except for my 1959 RCA Whirlpool Imperial "MARK" XII, with my name in lights and from the year of my birth, this is rapidly becoming my favorite of 7 machines. It's already the loudest.

Does anyone know how rare or "findable" the bleach dispenser is? Does it dispense by just "bouncing" the bleach out during agitation?

Thanks

Mark

BLEACH AND DYE DISPENSER FOT 1-18 WASHERS

These are still around I may have an extra one ?. The cup just held the LCB or dye as the washer filled and it went into the water very quickly when agitation started, but it is convenient to use. Normally I just stop my 1-18 near the end of wash and twist off the agitator cap and pour in the LCB, replace cap and let the cycle resume.

bleach dispensor spring

If someone could measure their bleach dispensor spring it would help with picking out a replacement.
spring free length
wire size (diam)
spring coil diam
# of turns

That will help get the right stiffness of spring installed.

Anyone have one they can measure with calipers?

thanks
