Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Ugh.. Anyway, Check Gary's estate sales in Saint Clair Shores Michigan for the W/D Set. The sale starts the 28th!

I frequently check the sales ahead of time for Vintage TV's and 1-18's, but this was unreal!
I thought someone on here might be looking for a set this rare. They need to be saved!

Where's The Kitchen

I hate it when they don't let you in the kitchen.  You can see a chrome Sunbeam model J on it's side in the blender table shot.

Isn't this place just nuts!!!!!!

Three Control Tower washers the other day and a dryer, and today a Custom Imperial SET in BLACK for Good Friday. Amazing.

I hope and pray a member has the time and wherewithal to collect them. What an unbelievable treat!

Captain, how far away are you from them, and who else is close. This set was made for Automatic Washer.

Thank you, Thomas

Well, the secret is out! This has been bounced from Facebook around in emails for nearly a week now. There certainly will be a few interested in this set!

Charcoal was introduced late in the 1957 line by Frigidaire and carried as a stock color until 1959'ish, then available by special order only. Like the control tower controls, the color was likely far ahead of it's time for wide acceptance by designers and the average homemaker. Fingerprints, dust, and smudges would have driven many crazy although those objections seem to have been resolved with the stainless steel fad in recent years.

You dont see it Hans?

Of all the people. :P

:D

Its a Lux XXX its in the bottom corner of one of the pictures.

We should organize how we as a club are going to acquire this set IF it is to be a cooperative effort. There must be someone who is able to travel to this place. Let's find out who, IF it is to be a cooperative effort. We need someone who is not spooked by auctions AND someone who will be able to evaluate the functional condition of the pair although if someone is there bidding on it for a museum or for use as a movie prop, operating condition won't matter to them.

I'm sorry it was deemed a secret to be kept. I hope we will not have club members bidding against one another. It would be a shame to lose this find to an individual or organization outside AW.org because we do not present a unified front.

Maybe this is all moot if some people have decided all of this already. If they have, I wish them the best.

I think I wasnna cry that is such a beautiful sight!!  And they don't even have that psky, ugly sheer look model demonstrating them.  Now, where's Chris when ya need him to model those machines!!!

Is it an auction or just a sale? I did not read anything about an auction in the listing, just that they will hand out numbers to let people in. I've only been to one estate sale, so I'm far from knowledgeable on the subject. It's about 60 miles from me, so a bit far and I known there are members in the Detroit area that will snap the set up.

I find these sales depressing, seeing a persons life just tossed out there in piles of junk. All this stuff meant something to someone and now it's just being pawed through by hordes of people.

Matt, these sales can be thought of as depressing. I have purchased crocheted pieces simply because I know the work and dedication that went into them and did not want to see them boxed up for the thrift store or worse. On the other hand, you can also think of these sales as a grand oppotunity for someone else to find and enjoy things that the original owner liked or, in the case of stuff put away and never used, as things they saved that are now being passed on to another generation who really want them and have the chance to acquire them.

It might just be a sale, but if several people show interest in an item, the seller might decide to take bids.

Tom, I like the way you view estate sales. I love going to them, but when the family leaves photographs up on the walls and is selling them, that's when it gets to me.

Lol. You are right!

It looks kinda like a Lux. Must be the grey and red. Immediately the xxx popped into my head.

WoW

That is one very beautiful washer/dryer set.

Why do I get the feeling 28 April 2011 is going to be a hot time somewhere in Detroit? *LOL*

This is going to be one interesting estate sale. Am putting my money on the person who rolls up with a truck and large sum of funds! *LOL*

Large sum indeed!

I emailed the link on the ad and asked how much the washer and dryer were and just got a reply. He wants $850 for the set. Clearly he knows he has something you don't see everyday. If someone is willing to lay down the money they would have a nice rare set to add to their collection.

I have to disagree with you Corey.  While it is a very rare set, there is no way that set is worth $850.  The most the seller should be asking is no more than $400.  The amount of time & the scarcity of parts this set will require even if the machines are used on an extremely limited basis is huge.  I just wish the best to whomever gets them.  GOOD LUCK!

Horses for courses I suppose. We've seen club members "set the price" for more than that on less scarce machines. If they were white, I'd agree, but has anyone ever seen another charcoal '57?

Tough to match that kind of elegance and style for the price of a plastic front loader.
