1957 Frigidaire set in Charcoal!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Peter is right

painting could never compare. Oh sure for looks but in no way for durability.

My '57 machine that Robert saved for me was outside on the farm for 25 years, at the very least, and since it is all porcelain it was an easy cabinet restore as you can see:

And when he and I went to dig it out, it was 2 feet in the mud so that whole bottom was in wet mud for who knows how long.

Anyway it was almost a 2 year restore on the guts of the thing and there are still parts it needs but it stands as a benchmark the way it is so I wouldn't consider painting that cabinet.

Painting appliances

You guys are correct about painting porcelain. It is not as easy as one might think. I have done it a couple times, however all the porcelain has to be media blasted off first.(not cheap to have done either) I would never do it to a set that was in good condition, because paint is NOT as tough as porcelain. However with the green Kenmore pictured, and the turquoise Rollermatics, the porcelain was shot. Battery acid ruined the top of the Kenmore, and hard use and rust had ruined the lower cabinet on the Rollermatic. I have not had any problems with the paint on either of these machines, however I am very careful with all my machines anyway. That being said, had the porcelain been in good condition, these machines would have not had colour changes.
I would rather have a nice set in the original white porcelain, then paint in any colour. However, when you have a lemon anyway, you may as well make your lemonaid in your favourite flavour.

Anyone know who got the charcoal set yet???

Hey Rick

How nice to see you again. Would you show us your pink & green Tower Frigidaires if you can? Thanks.

The Rollermatics are stunning. Pete & Paul will be shouting for joy seeing these again.

Last I heard neither Robert nor John knew who got the Charcoals. The grapevine is dry.

JOHN COMBO~~would you tell everyone the story about the next set of Charcoals?

I've re-read and re-read John's post... It does not read to me that a second pair was found... It reads that he is the second runner up if the first deal falls thru... I guess we'll wait and see!

57 CHARCOAL FRIGIDARE PAIR

I painted over my 1966 porcelain copper-tone GE combo that is in my kitchen over 24 years ago to make them black with two part marine epoxy and you would swear they are black porcelain. The repaint job has held up perfectly with no special care. I know that nothing beats a factory porcelain finish but you have to remember that I am now married to a auto body painting expert. So you never know when something may show up in charcoal. I am thinking of having my outdoor kitchen done in Frigidares teracotta color.

OK, how about this: Does anyone know roughly what it would cost to have say a piece of metal porcelain coated? What about a custom porcelain color?

PeterH770:
New dryers this week huh? AWWW that's cool! I bet you're tickled pink about that! Are you going to take the old ones out back and turn them into 10" cubes? Make them explode? Are you going to throw them in a fire pit of oil?

Are you getting the Dexter double pocket dryers? Blue or black? I like Wasco FL washers better than the Dexters, but Dexter Dryers are pretty good.

The Laundromat business is a very tough now. You have the rising cost of utilites + other fees + machines + increased shipping cost + people abusing the machines!  You must REALLY like it.   You must have more patience than me as I'm not so sure I can stand people misusing the machines!

Well, I've got a feeling we'll  see a set in Charcoal Black from Combo52, as he's got more than one trick up his sleeve!

John writes: "as it turns out I may end up with a Charco

And, "we made no offer to buy." See Post #70. I spoke to John last week at length about this, and he told me he had a really nice identical pair in white, and that Smitty might paint them charcoal. But I wouldn't presume to tell the story without asking him, since he is a good friend. In fact, I was hoping he'd clarify lest someone misread thinking he did indeed have a hand in the now infamous Charcoals.

Appreciate your good natured challenge to my reading skills; it made me smile. Time to come out of the closet. I'd love to have a laundromat, but you should know what I recently retired from: 36 years as an English teacher. About the only thing I do really well is...... READ>

Thanks, Joe

I loved it. I taught seniors and some college, but it gets to be too much, too hard, too consuming. All I wanna do now is play with washers and read and stay up late and sleep in.

Easta Special..

Here you go Mike. I finally replaced my 70 year old furnace last month, so I will have room to put these side by side. The washer had a bearing fail last Fall, so it is now out in the garage. It should be a Summer project to get it up and running again, so I can finally displace these as they should be.
The dryer came from the Aberdeen farm. Robert spent many hours on the dryer restoration years ago.

Just look at those things.....

THEY'RE GORGEOUS. You know what, Rick, when I thought about asking you the other day, in my mind I called them your towers in Easter egg colors, and today you call them the "Easta Special." Love it when that stuff happens. I hope they last as long as your furnace--70 Years. Thanks. Be dreamin' tonight about a set in sunset shades of red and orange. Hey, Just thought of a cool second career, painting Tower sets in brilliant color combos, tangerine and lemon.....

PeterH770: your mat looks very good! I thought you had Wasco Gen 6 machines. Maybe you could take one ore two of those dryers out to a cornfield and "officespace" them.

Truth Serum

John, I didn't expect you to "sing" so early in the interrogation. I was thinking that the Kelvinator went into the Kenmore so easily it wouldn't take nearly as much effort to photoshop a Gray Tower Set.

Hi Jon! Yes, the washer came via Greg, from Lee Maxwell. The washer has a bad bearing, and is out in the garage right now. Be a project for this summer, or fall.

The old gravity furnace just used too much gas. There was not a thing wrong with it otherwise. (took up too much room too) I'll post before and after pics sometime in Super. I have more room in the basement now, so look out!

Does anyone know who got the charcoal set yet??? I would sure hope that someone will share pics with us....

Thanks for the kind words Kenny! You know you are always welcome here anytime.
