Eureka!

Good news... 2 missions accomplished for the price of one.

1) I found the original adjustable cold control. I just started unscrewing everything in sight and putting it back until it popped up.

2) I also figured out why the supco thermostat wasn't working correctly. Apparently, the wires arced. So it probably wasn't my imagination that it was working better when I first put it in after all. I had taped them, but I guess not well enough. That was scary to find. Thank goodness I checked it when I did before there was a fire.

All is well and fixed (thank god). Note to self double electrical tape from now on.

Keith,

If you go back to reply 2 where you see the picture of the inside of the fridge without food. If you look in between the two full width shelves on the back of the fridge, it is behind the white circular plug with a screw on each side of it. Philco literally hid it in plain sight.

Got it!

Thanks, Will. My Automatic is still behaving, but I wanted to be prepared. I'm still wondering why your light is set up as it is. Do you think it's original? Still groovin' on your kitchen!

It's original. I think Philco monkeyed with the design some over the years. I have a friend whose light bulb is in the center of the back. I imagine it's something with the "True Zone" in the back of the fridge...

That light with its colored lens is original

I've seen Philcos from this period with interiors trimmed in teal, pink, gold and amber, and in many cases the light has a lens cover that matches the interior color. The attention that Philco paid to details like this really set their refrigerators apart from most of their competitors offerings.
