Ad reads: "
Nicknamed "Pinky" by Maytag. automatic clothes dryer from 1958, with backsplash that LIGHTS UP! Everything is there. This model was known for running super quiet. Come check it out in person, its in really great shape. May need a heating element. Use it to dry clothes or for a really cool table. The third pic shows what it looks like lit up. $25 is a steal for this Gem of Americana."

Interesting.  If it really is from 1958 it would be a very late production 640.  It also appears to be missing the thermostat buttons as well as the back panel cover.  It certainly is a good deal for $25 if you are looking for parts or already HAVE parts for one of these dryers as the cabinet looks really nice and the panel glass for these is a rare find, indeed!

These are nice dryers.  They dry fast and HOT.  I had the gas version hooked up for about 6 months and was overall very impressed with its performance.

It uses an open coil heating element so restringing one is very easy. It is in the top of the outer drum.

This dryer was check-rated by CU when it was tested, if it is a 640. It has a HUGE perforated porcelain drum with red plastic baffles in an almost 30" wide cabinet. The matching washer was only 24" wide so both would fit in 54" of space. In keeping with Maytag's expansive use of aluminum, the blower and its housing in the original were aluminum which was not too durable so the replacement parts were Bakelite. This dryer uses a 3 inch vent.

Actually the 640C cabinet was 31-1/2" wide.  ALL Newton-made Maytag washers from the original AMP up through the LAV3600 in 2006 were 25-1/2" wide.  The dryer cabinet was reduced to 28-1/2" in 1966 and then reduced again in 1997 to 27".

That's not the gas valve cover.  It's the lint screen.  If this was a gas dryer the gas valve access was the the upper right-hand corner.

Read this thread about the gas version of this dryer that I gave foster care to for about 9 months last year.
