1965 Bendix LT Washer Dryer Belt Help Update

Hi I've finally gotten around to trying to sort the problem with my washer. Thanks Mathew(Keymatic3203) as i contacted the link you gave and a branch nearby me supplied me with a belt that is a perfect replacement for only £8.00. I fitted it and tensioned it (which i thought it had been before but hadn't), (which is a bugger on this machine) as you have to remove a pulley to squeeze the belt in, then slacken a band type clamp (to allow the motor to rotate - and therefore causing the off centre main drive shaft move away from drum pulley - therefore tensioning the belt) and adjust a bolt to tighten up the tension. This all sounds easy but access is limited behind wires and pipes.(i could have taken off a side panel but that involves removing the top and front)

So it now has two perfectly tensioned belts with no shriek on start up , but i am sure the gearbox is not making noises it used to, you know how you learn all the noises your appliances make and anything a little different bugs you, well thats where im at at present.

The machine works fine but when spinning its a little noisier than it used to be, i know its the gearbox as the drum bearings are silent.The machine has been in use 9 years now so may be starting to wear a little.

The oil level is good but i still have auto box car fluid in as still not found anywhere to buy the modern equivalents (Thanks Electron 1100 for the info i still need to sort it ta!)

The does seem to be a stumble as it comes out of spin, the solenoid shifter works fine but it clonks as it goes back into normal drum speed .

So does anyone know if any replacement gearboxes are kicking about? haha i guess i could get it reconditioned if not too expensive.

I think i will investigate some new oil and try replacing it as it may have just becoming contaminated and new fresh oil make help.

Also i would like to thank Mathew again for a new Hoover TT pump as i now have that working fine so its always there to use occasionally

i am glad you are moving along with this lovely machine, i could be talking out of arse, but when you think how many miles a car gear box does with the same oil could it be that the oil doesnt need changing.

Or maybe go mad and use ordinary gearbox oil hypoid 80 or 90 these are both thick oils and i have no idea what the oil nisde your gearbox is like

just thoughts thats all

Oil change

Hi well I did change the oil , the old auto box transmission oil had turned a dark silvery grey but with no noticeable lumps of grit or metal in it. So it's now got cat SAE 80W90 oil in. It's working fine but is definitely making a different noise on spinning but not a dangerous sounding one.

What is the pulley looking thing for that I marked in pink?

Also is the Bendix a 24" wide frame ie about 61 cm?

Also the solenoid in sky blue I am guessing might pull a flapper valve when in drying mode?

I marked up your image for clarity of my questions.

It looks like as nice machine

I guess too that the dark round housing ( lime green) has a blower fan; or it is a manifold for the dryers exit vent?

Hi there,

The pulley in pink is a tensioner pulley that should have a belt on between the other pulley on the gearbox and the fan housing that is black with the green marking on , i took the photo before i put the last belt on and tensioned them both. The blue solenoid is a flapper that operates when the dryer comes in to play. The gearbox has the dryer fan running continuously (which makes it noisier unfortunately) and only when the dryer flapper opens is air sucked through the machine pulling hot air through the front of the drum from the heater on top.

The machine is 26 inches wide too

Hi 3 Belt Westy you're nearly right! your yellow line should go to the pulley that is sitting proud and to the left as see in photo 2 or 3.

Thanks Jetcone i know you're a fan of Bendix's (or is it Bendie?) This has been my daily washer for coming up to 10 years now and without a glitch really.

Hi Mike the repair manual states that at full spin the drum is spinning at 650RPM so its not bad really, probably no worse than ones from the 70s , i find as well because the drum is larger than ones of that era it dries as well as a modern 800 rpm one, if im using the dryer side on cottons for example is use a smaller gravity spin dryer first (vintage obviously!)
