Picked up a lovely 1980 Hoover Dryer De Luxe this morning! So happy with it however the motor won't run. It doesn't even try to run (no humming). I can only assume power isn't reaching it so where do I start? The switch works and the timer runs and the light is on so what would prevent it? Is there a stat or something I should check?

James.

Does it have capacitor start for the motor? I think some had a relay instead, in which case that could be faulty. If it does have a capacitor and you have a spare you could try changing it anyway, as they don't always hum. Does the drum turn OK by hand? Is it heating up? If not, it could be the door switch.

Everything is ok now!

The motor was burned out. Luckily I had a spare Hoover twin tub motor which was of the exact same design so I used the windings from that and had it up and running by the evening! It works really well but the fan is really noisey.

And it's not a Hotpoint for once!

Congratulations James on your save of such a beautiful gem! Lost an auction of a similar dryer to this witch was only up the road! Can I please request a video of it in action when you need to use it please. And also is this a reverse action dryer? Thanks, Chris.

Hoover Dryer

Hello firstly well done on executing the repair good thinking there, also congratulations on getting an absolute classic Hoover dryer these are very good machines.

You should grease the rear bearing, if you take off the fan drive pulley you can get to the bearing shaft also the only other possible problem is the fan drive belt itself these can and do go limp over years and the fan will not turn, any questions dont hesitate to ask

nice one James

oh I know the rumble you mean, when you think of it such a small bearing for that diameter of fan. As Gary said the bearing needs greasing, you can try by taking the pulley off as suggested. But if it's really bad you may need to take the fan and shaft out, which requires the whole back coming out and drilling the rivots out of the section that holds the rear drum bearing, then youcan take the fan out and grease it up more compleatly, the other problem Ive found with these, is that, as in the twin tub pulsator bearings, there is a felt wick in between the two bushes of the fan bearing which can fray and actually have a braking effect on the fan.

Whatever you decide to do, its worth taking it apart to clean out the heat shield and heating elements at the front of the drum, also you can then check the front bearing pads and if reqired the fan bearing housing used to be available as a spare part. I've renued the bearings in mine and the dryer just purrs, it's been our regular dryer for the last couple of years, full load dry in an hour from the matching 1100 washing machine.

Great to see your collection growing, and your repair skill developing

Hi guys!

Thanks you for the congrats, it is a lovely dryer, now I wonder if it will take forever to find the matching 1100 or even the Keymatic for it! I greased the fan shaft and although not eliminating the rumble its only a mere fraction as deafening as it used to be and I can now enjoy the dryer. However I think the belt is a major factor in this rumble as it isnt tight at all and falls off. If I find a tighter belt I'm sure it will sound alot better. Thanks for curing the rumble so far!

Looked through my cupboards...

Found a suitable belt, I think it came off a twin tub but I'm not sure. Its a close match, frayed a bit but not that bad and its tighter so the machine is quieter. So happy its working fine now.

SORRY TO BRING THIS ALL THE WAY BACK UP!

I was using this dryer today for the first time since Winter. It was just to give it a health check and there were some line dried sheets that needed doing after a few showery spells this afternoon. Dryer "purred" as Mathew put it thanks to the belt I had replaced when this thread was first active last year. Anyway I was wondering if anybody had a venting kit surplus to their requirements because I would like to avoid having a steamy shed and the facility is there to vent this dryer. I have the small rectangular duct that covers the vent I just need the actual hose and connector.

Thanks, James.
