Hi folks, this is my first post. I'm fairly handy with tools and have done a few repairs on my washer throughout the many years of ownership.

I've replaced the wigwag plunger for the spin cam bar, twice this year. So, I thought I would dig a little deeper to find out why it keeps failing.

The best thing that I can come up with is that the spin cam bar is not getting pushed all the way back towards the motor. During the wash cycle (agitate), the tub spins a bit. So, this tells me the brake is not getting fully applied. The wigwag plunger keeps skipping across the step in the slot. This skipping across the step causes the plunger to fail. I've lubed the dickens out of the spin cam bar, but that hasn't helped.

I can buy a new cam bar, but I am afraid that there might be something else going on. As you can imagine, I can only go so long without a washer. I am reluctant to buy a new washer, but I am thinking I might have to.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Brian

well it is usually recommended if your going to have a vintage machine, always best to have a backup just in case, something simple like a portable Avanti can help wonders while repairs are being made...

actually we would need more pics.....I am curious if the spring pulling the yoke down is in place.....and there is an adjuster that can make the clutch/brake make better contact if needed...

lubing the plunger may help, but may need replaced at this point....as it may not be fully engaging when required....

keep us posted....

Your problem is most likely inside the gearcase. I just rebuilt a 1984 Whirlpool that was doing the same thing. Water had made its way into the gearcase due to a failed seal and wreaked havoc internally.
