Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Me thinks there's something not quite right with the was

Louie, I noticed the pause is wayyy to long between end of agitation and beginning of spin for both the wash and rinse portions, especially for this style of timer, which is the continuously moving timer and not the timer that moves an increment every 45 seconds. I kept hearing two or three times some sort of clank noise (that doesn't sound like a timer noise) that sounds like the motor is trying to start up for the spin/drain and the windings aren't quite right. then it finally catches and starts the spin/drain. when I moed here in 1986, I had friends that had that same washer and it only paused for about 10 seconds between end of agitation and start of spin for those phases. Kind of like at the end of the wash spin and as it begins to coasst to a stop, just a few seconds later the water beigins coming in before it stops spinning. That coasting and beginning of adding water was the clue to me that this wasn't the "snapping" timer, as I call it, that advanced an increment every 45 seconds.

Now you've gone and done it

Now ya got me dreaming about bootin the Fridgemore to the garage to sit next to the Lady Shredmore and have an old-fashioned long stroke helical drive Maytag in my laundry room. Ugh!!!

And unfortunately, I totally disagree with Allen. I think those old Maytags are extremely therapeudic and soothing just listening to them and just like on the video, there's just enough action to keep one's interest. I mean ya got turnover, ya got water sloshing back and forth around the tub as it washes.

Far more soothing than the LAT9800 model that my mom had that matched my LDE9824 Dependable Care dryer. I mean, that fast stroke of the orbital tranny couupled with the fast siwsh siwsh sound of the water as the top fins swished the water. Yes it had the typical Maytag motor hum, but all that siwshing was extremely annoying and disturbing to my Maygat mantra and chant I was so used to.

I don't think it's a timer issue...

It seems to be working fine....it isn't smooth running, more like every few seconds you hear it move. As for the other sounds I haven't a clue. So far so good.

Maytag

Their is actually nothing wrong with the washer it was a 1974 model and they were set to pause for a full minute before the spin. The later ones only paused for 10 seconds they had made some type of change to the timer. Thanks for the videos Louie. Keep us posted - do you have the manual to post?
Thanks Peter

Louie

their thinking of the rapid advance timers, more like 90's versions......the only early 80's one is the electronic ones which only pause for seconds, which I also have.....

1970s MT WASHER TIMERS

Yes your timer is working correctly, all automatic washer timers advance in increments, none move continually like dryer timers as too much contact arcing would occur. Your washer has the black plastic Kingston timer, I always liked these timers as they had a good feel when you are setting them. Unfortunately they have at least 10 times the likelihood of needing a new timer motor compared to the Mallory timers. The annoyingly long pause is completely normal, MT finely got this correct in the 1990s when they added a sub-interval contact to the timers so it could reverse the motor in about 10 seconds.

Congratulations on your new MT washer, 1974 was the year I started at the local MT home appliance store selling MT and WP appliances. It is always fun to get a new appliance 30 some years later, enjoy John.

Congrats on your new machine

I love my Maytags.

Interesting how the lid bumpers are more towards the middle not on the edges.

And your machine fills so so high.

Good luck with your new 'toy'

John, GE washer timers (classic FilterFlo, anyway) advance continuously (not in increments), yes?

The A206, A906 and A608 that I have pause for a full increment between agitate and spin.

I noticed the nice high water level too. I was certain I'd see the softener cup start floating upward. It's a precise and perfect fill.

Ultramatic, thanks for the pics and video's. That's a very nice Tag. I know you filled to normal /large for the vid, small would of washed that amount without going off balance. Sometimes I wash on small for a few items and push medium, during the first spin for the rinse fill, small loads frequently get off balance with too much water. I really liked your vid, Your machine is much quieter than mine. alr

@ Ralph...that high water level is thanks to Martin's magic fingers...LOL!

@ alr2903 You're very welcome, and thanks. The culprit was that, a high water level and too little clothes.

that high water level is thanks to Martin's magic finger

Yes, I figured Martin had done some tweaking. His magic fingers do cause many things to rise for larger loads.

A207

I had an A207 that was one model up from the one you found. Awesome condition BTW.

I enjoyed that machine for the time it was in use. I hated to sell it off, but in the garage, it wasn't getting the use it needed to keep it in order. AFAIK, it is being used as a daily driver by a family of four today.

Thanks for posting your machine, she's a beauty for sure!
