I bought a set of these in 1998. Mine were MOL or a notch above. The washer had to have the tub seal replaced twice during its first year, and during the second service visit they noticed that the water pump was cracked. After about two years the tub began to index slightly (1/4" at a time), accompanied by a soft knocking sound each time the agitator changed direction. Such good quality.
The dryer never needed a repair, but it had some issues. It was prone to melting grill marks from the heating element cover into certain synthetic items, like track pants. The inside of the door was plastic and, in addition to attracting much lint and pet hair, occasionally tried to zap me if I stood to close to it while unloading the dryer. Not very nice. Oh, and when a cycle was completed, depending on which heat setting was selected and which cycle was used, the timer knob would continue to tick away and advance clear through the following cycle. It was strange, but mostly annoying. The pair and me parted company after three cold and distant years.
My parents bought a set in either 1999 or 2000, whichever year Amana changed the washer timer from clicking to turning smoothly (and it could be turned clockwise and counter-clockwise). They bought near TOL models; theirs have rotary controls and I think the TOL models at the time had electronic controls. The set is in a part-time home where my parents spend about one-third of their time, so it gets used somewhat less than average machines. After at least seven years, though, neither machine has had a problem. My mom would like to replace the set with front loaders, so she checks under the washer for leaks from time to time. Hoping.
