Can you get a refund?

seeing as it was obviously not packed as well as it should have been!!

lets face it the average postie is not gonna care if its vintage or not as long as he gets his quota of parcels through the system.

i D#$% well better

Get a full refund!I examined the mixer itself and if you look closely, the base is cracked also, totally ruined!its amazing something can survive 80 years and be destroyed by carelessness!

I think many of us have experienced this. It does not diminish your disappointment, or anger; we all commiserate with you. I found perhaps one of the very last surviving Club Glass drip coffee makers from WWII when Club Aluminum bought Inland Glass because of metal rationing. The stupid woman shipped it in the thin paper box that was supposed to be overwrapped in a carton. I could hear the broken glass as I lifted it off the porch. I, too, told her I would pay extra for secure packaging. I think it is largely a problem with younger people who are used to plastic and not used to doing anything for themselves like packing and mailing. As you said, it is heartbreaking how something that survived for so long can be destroyed so quickly by carelessness or a willfully slipshod attitude. She refunded my money but did ask that I return the little instruction pamphlet to her.

While we are on the topic, this is a very bad time of year to buy on eBay and have stuff delivered by UPS. Twice I have had merchandise show up as "delivered" according to UPS when it was not. In one case, the slimey seller did not press the case. In the other, the nice lady got on UPS's tail and had them do a search. It was found on the truck. The driver was accumulating some gifts without having to shop for them, although I don't think a few Centura bowls would have made that great a present, but they were packed in a large box to protect them so he might have thought he really had a treasure.

Am That Lucky Mine Arrived Without a Scratch

Bowls, mixer, beaters, etc... all perfect. Mind you seller did a great job of packing including double boxing and lots of cushioning material. It also helped IIRC the bowls and mixer came in separate boxes.

When sold off some of my vac pot collection made very sure to wrap, pack, cushion, double box the heck out of everything. Not one complaint from the buyers.

Honestly think you should file a claim with eBay against the seller. Have had to speak to a few eBay sellers recently about items that arrived damaged and without waiting for a formal case all costs were refunded.

One seller set something that was vintage with cast iron parts. Well as you can imagine cast iron is subject to breaking and one part did. Worse the box arrived damaged and re-taped by the USPS with official "Opened by in the presence and by the USPS". Yes, got a refund on that as well because the thing was shoved into a huge box with nil cushioning and or parts being secured. It was no wonder the thing bounced around and was damaged.

It happened to me too!

Although not as rare as yours I had this happen with a vintage Sunbeam Mixer. It had the bowls and the juicer all broken to pieces due to careless packing. I did get a refund and didn't have to return the mixer. Over the years I have been able to replace the bowls at Estate sales but have not been able to replace the juicer. I have all the metal parts just need to glass part.

As I have started to collect them I have had occasion to have a few of them shipped. Now before I bid I ask the seller if they are willing to remove shipping from the auction and take it to UPS to have it professionally shipped at my expense. If they don't agree I move on. It's just not worth it to lose something so rare over someone being careless.

I had one mixer shipped to me from Canada by a man who refurbishes them. The box showed up so damaged and so beat up it looked like all corners were rounded. I was certain I would open the package to broken bowls but they were fine. I was surprised. I just shipped two off to be refurbished by a man in Florida. We will see how those come back. As no bowls are involved I only have to worry about handles and other bakelite parts.

I actually have been on the other end of this.  I sold a vintage blender on ebay, packaged it will, had the USPS fragile stamp it.  It arrived to it destination with the glass pitcher ruined.  The buyer was furious and so was I.  Luckily I insured it for more than I new I would sell it for.  I refunded the persons money, filed my claim with photos to the USPS and got my check in the mail.  I still to this day hate it happened though.  Other people just don't give a d**n

What a shame. I've never seen that mixer before. I've only had one such experience with a sputnik looking electric can opener a few years ago. The seller wrapped a piece of newspaper around it, shoved it in a box and I received the pieces. Plus it was filthy. I sent them an angry email and they returned my money and told me to keep it.

eBay disaster

I too have received damaged mixers. Two from insufficient packaging and the post office was of no help, saying I should have opened the package in the presence of an employee to make a claim of damage in transit. Some seller refuse to write feedback until after the receiver writes feedback about the seller and transaction. Also you cannot leave negative feedback any longer, what happened to being truthful about the facts!?! My Chrome V14C had a broken speed control knob, all the pieces were inside the box.
The seller claimed they provided sufficient padding, there was one folded newspaper in the box, there was plenty space for the mixer to move about to be damaged. The stand mixer was assembled on the stand.

Another seller mailed a portable mixer too me using the original box with no padding, just the mixer, cord and beaters in the box, upon leaving him feedback about there being no packing to prevent damage in transit, he then ammended his feedback to say I paid late!

It happened to me

with a D4 Rainbow Vacuum I bought back in 2006. I remember the user was Dwightsale in South Carolina....Their Ebay store looked great and they had lots of great feedback. I was really puzzled!! It wasn't packed that great, didn't look clean at all and sounded like it was on its last leg.

There was something wrong with it because it barely had suction. He said the older Rainbows didn't have much suction. That was his answer!! I could have debated but didn't.. At any rate, instead of returning it, I traded it for a new one....

I did not leave bad feedback because I really didn't want to deal with returning it, I did leave neutral feedback saying item wasn't quite as described.

It probably is a good store and they sell lots of nice used refurb vacs, but leave it to me to get the vacuum when someone must have been having a really bad day.

I think that when buying a mixer I would insist that the glass bowls be shipped separately. If the seller just puts the bowls on the mixer and then covers the whole thing in newspaper no wonder they broke.

After a bad experience with UPS back in the early 90's I never use them. They have a history of not paying off damage claims on things they have damaged. I'll give you a little secret here on how to deal with UPS if they break something and it was packed properly. Just tell them that if they don't pay off you'll take them to court and subpena their damage claim records. Then this will become public record. You will demonstrate to the court that they hardly ever pay of on claims made by their customers. This is in violation of most states deceptive trade practices laws. They are taking money for insurance with no intention of paying on damage claims. When you win your case they will have to pay you THREE times the amount of your damages.

Usually UPS will send a courier to your home with the check.

I also hate it when sellers think that the original retail packaging is good enough for shipping. They forget that those packages were made for in store use and not to ship something via UPS or FedEx.

I recently bought a part on Ebay from a person who had 100% positive rating but only had 50 auctions in the past 6 years. They said they would ship the part soon.
Well a week later it hadn't arrived. I had an electronic tracking number but when I entered it into the USPS system it didn't come up with any info. I finally e-mailed the seller who told me this one. "We live in rural Michigan. We only send out packages to be mailed when we get enough to make it worth our while. In another week or two we should have that many and we'll send your item then." I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that e-mail. I looked at her feedback and then realized that while there were no "slow shipping" remarks, there weren't any "Quick shipping" marks either. After I told her "I need this part NOW" she said she would make an exception in my case and ship the part immediately.

Looks like a neat little GE-Hotpoint Mixer-so sad it didn't arrive in better condition.Guess the bowls would be Unobtanium. When Kelly shipped me a small collection of Sunbeam mixers from his collection-they were sent in TWO large heavy boxes-one box contained the bowels and beater blades-All were well wrapped. The other box contained the motors and bases-again well wrapped.Other things shipped from some other Applianceville folks were well packed-guess Applianceville guys know how to pack and ship stuff so it gets to the recipient in one peice. From reading posts like where items are shipped by Non appliance type folks-thats when they get damaged-the shipper doesn't care-or doesn't know how to pack.I admit-don't know how to pack-so have someone who does do it-and pay for it-worth it!!!Had to ship some vacuums to a Vacuumland member-and had the UPS place pack the machines-the recipient said they arrived just fine.

I think what is mentioned above about the item surviving for 80 years and then due to a poor, insufficient packing job, it is gone forever. That is not a good feeling on so many levels. Disappointment and then on the collector mindset, it is and item that is rare and now another rare item is gone.

So sorry to read this.

I collect the small snack sets that were popular years ago. I have begged, offered to pay for professional packing, provided detailed suggestions/directions as to the packing,to the seller.

For a while I would simply shake the box when the UPS/USPS guy would deliver. If I heard glass moving, (and I did on so many occasions), I would open the parcel in front of the employee. The damage was ALWAYS due to insufficient packing, always.

I rarely have problems but a couple of years ago I bought a Hallicrafters TW-1000, Hallicrafters' version of the Zenith Transoceanic radio, and the seller simply put it into a tight-fitting box and shipped it. I basically received a box of kindling and radio parts. The front dial is plastic and was broken too. The seller tried to blame the post office - "Well, sometimes this happens because the carriers tend to be rough." Plus, she said she insured it but the insurance number was a nonsense number (turns out it was insurance provided by the ebay/paypal system - very confusing to figure this out. I pointed out that it was not the post office's fault, simply putting an old radio into a tight as a glove box is not proper packaging. Postal regs for fragile items state that there should be 4" of packing between the item and the outer  box and 2" between items in the box. She would never admit fault but refunded my money.
