Hello folks. A distant relative passed away two years ago. She moved from the city to the country (about 36 years ago) and did not have hookups at the country house. For years, she would wash clothes in the bath tub while the washer was on the back porch covered with thick plastic and duct tape. It seems that she had only had the washer for a year or two when she moved to the country, so it had almost "no use" with her. My dad spoke with their daughter and she told him that I can have the washer, but it probably is no more good. Well, Dad and I went to check on it and will go back with the truck in the next few days to load it up. More info to follow; I am so excited. Take care, folks. Todd

What No Hints!

Well I certainly can't wait to hear what this is. Do we get any hint's Todd? Even difficult hints??????????

SORRY

I am really sorry, because I didn't realize that I did not tell you guys what I found. I posted when I was nearly asleep last night and just looked at what I had done. My senior moments are coming faster!!! Bob is the only person that I had spoken to about this because I was not sure what it really was under those blankets and tarps. I found out that I won't be able to take it for a couple of weeks due to safety issues at the place where its hiding. When I peeked under the layers, I found a fairly plain looking control panel with temps, infinite water level and I think 3 cycles. Then I saw .... biting the nails ... hyperventillating ... It said Philco by Ford. Cool deal! Can't wait to get it in the garage at my folks' house. That's when I will really need to pick your brains. May sneak there to get some pics in the next few days.

Our next door neighbors had a Philco set when I was growing up. Chiffon yellow with a sort of blue-gray trim on the panels IIRC. As I recall it was the common situation where the dryer outlasted the washer. I think the dryer had a porthole window in the door. Main thing I remember is that even though it was an older neighborhood with a good amount of room between the homes, I could still hear a chirping noise in my upstairs bedroom that faced the service porch across the yard next door where the Philco dryer was operating.

Memories!

Re: Philco-Ford:

This might not be just a Washer, because Philco-Ford also made Washer/Dryer Combo's. One of my Parent's Neighbor's had a late 1950's or early 1960's Philco-Ford Washer/Dryer Combo. I remember seeing it operating a few times and couldn't believe how quiet it was. It was before the neat looking Color Control Push-Buttons Series that came out later on, not only on the Combo's but the Top-Load and Front-Load Washers and the Matched Dryers with the Window on the Dryer Doors.

Peace and Great Philco-Ford Laundry Days, Steve

top loader

This one is a top loading washer. It has that neat little flapper agitator. Control panel and interior are in great shape and clean ... the exterior needs a bit of work. She had it tightly covered (except for about a foot up all the way around the bottom, so rust is there ... which is a given for Louisiana! Can't wait to get it home!!! Todd

I don't believe that I have ever seen this machine before!!! Unreal, it is just beautiful!!! Does this Duomatic work???

"Stored in the corner..."

That was hooked up when I we were playing in your basement a year ago, what did you hook up in it's place, John?

That is a beautiful Duomatic and it does work perfectly. John does the most thorough washer/dryer restorations I've ever seen, they basically are brand new when he finishes them.

53 Duomatic

I am going to restore the 53 Duomatic in its place. Now all the machines I have hooked up are the 56 Duomatic,58 Duomatic Kenmore combo,47 bolt down Bendix,& Dexter double load bolt down. And soon the 53 Duomatic.

Love seeing that. All Duomatics are interesting -- they made so many changes in the control panels. Woodgrain was really in by '66!

As for the NOS machine -- My family got a new Philco-Ford toploader in 1969. It had the turquoise control panel and turquoise Flexawash agitator. My uncle was a Philco salesan at the time, and we also got a range and a console radio-phonograph. The washer lasted until '86 when it was replaced by a BD Whirlpool, which the dealer said was the last BD he had in stock. Anyway, my mom still has the Philco agitator cap, which she uses for measuring bird feed!

The main problem with the Philco washer that I remember was that it didn't handle unbalanced loads as well as toploaders do today. It was much better in that respect than an aunt's Filter-Flo, however.

The Philco stereo is still going, BTW.
