~and because of the high prices in the US, more and more of my covers are purchased at IKEA, one of the few stores that consider a cover to be a "normal" rather than "upscale" item.

I am always amazed at the the prices of a simple rectangular piece of fabric.

Curtains, bed sheets, towels, comforters/duvets, area rugs appear to me to be WAY over-priced, in general. More amazing to me is that a house can have a bad roof, a leaky hot water heater, decaying electrical service and need concrete work, but one of the genders will buy all sorts of "nesting material" to make it soft and comfy before considering much more critical structual needs. I am guessing prices are such because these items meet some sort of emotional/psychological need and the prices are what the market will bear.

Think also about the prices of items for a baby. Through-the- (decaying) roof!

Some IKEA comforter covers, particularly the more expensive ones (defined as $60 rather than $25...) have closures such as buttons. The simpler ones, often in bright colors or geometric patterns, are more affordable, but typically only have a slit on the side for the comforter, no buttons or zipper. Some comforter covers at Company Store run as high as $200. None of my IKEA covers has ever worn out. The fabric may be rough and not as comfy as pricier models, but they last and last.

I bought a set of brass safety pins for now, following Laundress's sage advice. And I will explore buying a set of snaps and an attachment tool to re-do some of the covers as a permanent solution. My sewing skills are poor, but after researching it on the net, it appears that you can attach snaps with a tool (either used with a hammer or a plier-like device) without having to sew them in, so it doesn't look that hard. Also, that two-piece IKEA comforter needs a few more snaps along the sides to keep the two pieces from separating, so I can fix the comforter and the covers.
