You've never seen GWTW?
Scarlett was in mourning for her first husband (who died of measles) shortly after joining to fight for "The Cause".
Being a VERY young widow, Scarlett chafs at society's conventions on how she should dress and behave, (Mammy catches her trying on a colourful bonnet), and her mother arranges for to go to Atlanta to say with Aunt Pitty-Pat.
Aunt PP is just as mortified as all of Atlanta society when Scarlett insists on going to the ball. This was at a time when a widow in first stages of mourning was expected to shut herself up indoors, and not go out unless totally necessary. Widows certianly were NOT supposed to be at any ball, dance, concert, play etc or anyplace else where persons were having fun, hence Aunt PP's worry. Afterall Scarlett was living under her roof, so the blame would be placed on her as well.
When Rhett bids for S'oH's hand for dance, and worse she accepted, she might just as well walked through Lenox Square naked.
This being GWTW the ball went on anyway, Scarlett had her dances and not many, aside from her aunt were worried. However the likely result in real life would have been something out the film "Jezebel", where Bette Davis's character is publicly shunned on the ballroom floor for wearing a red dress. *LOL*
