Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Don't go by looks alone

Back in the eighties, I bought this set in "ebony", brand new. It was hard to walk by the laundry dept. @ Sears, w/o doing a double-take on them. They were a Limited Edition set with a built-in 5-year maintenance agreement. Who could go wrong???
Well, I did. ... Being that DD was relatively new at that time, and I had little or no experience with it; I fell for them. The automatic-ness of them I liked, as well as the flourescent lit console. ... But... The noise level of the washer I refused to tolerate for a TOL machine. I must have had them around a year before asking/demanding Sears to take them back.So what they did was Pro-Rate them, and picked them up.Not a total loss, but... after all I was one of there "Best Customers" LOL...

Me too...

I too fell for this set. Three service calls in 5 months. Called the manager at the store where purchased. Said I got 12 months same as cash and I haven't paid anything on them and have no intention of doing so. They came and took them both. Good riddance. Went back to Sears to look for another set and the salesman pissed me off so I went to a local Mom and Pop shop. Never looked back!

Personal Experience

I didn't say they were any good - just that they are good-looking. I had a pair of these in white that I purchased about 1992, and the washer proved to be a P.O.S. It came with a 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and as soon as the warranty expired I sold them. During that 3-year period, Sears was out to my house on a service call once a quarter. That was totally unacceptable.

I agree!

I had the Last Lady Kenmore electronic in the 80's, trouble, trouble!

Then after came this set Limited Edition, I guess Whirlpool thinks people will forget, if it's not a Kenmore or a Whirlpool every couple of years these things hit the sales floor and then they disappear again.

Whirlpool would have been luck just making a top loader without electronic controls and just a flourescent lit console.

I still have that dryer, which worked when it was put into storage in 2007. I had the washer too, but it died in 2004; probably the digital control board-$220. My (then) new Whirlpool Ultimate Care II was $400, so I bought the new one instead of fixing the black one. Not sure, but I would guess that a determined person could've scavenged parts from any 3-speed and made it work, but I didn't deem it worth it. (of course) The washer died with a tub full of soapy water and white towels. They'd been in there for close to a week by the time I got around to taking care of the problem, and REEKED. I bet it took 3 washes in the new machine to kill the smell.
