Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I would say the cheapest whirlpool and the Amanas, the models that don’t have the diverter in them and they run all the arms at once still. It’s not worth the money for the high end Whirlpool Maytag Kenmore KA, they are bound to failure. In my experience these cheaper whirlpools last longer, clean better, and have better reliability considering nothing new is very reliable.

"Nothing new is very reliable"
AEG invented the first dishwasher with alternating spray arms to save water and energy in the mid to late 1980`s so this "new" technology has been around for nearly 40 years.
This was after AEG whitegoods division went bankrupt and went to Daimler Benz (long before Electrolux got it and finally destroyed the brand). The diverter back then was still driven by a small motor like they used to use in mechanical timers so it was not exactly the same technology as today but still I wouldn`t say what we have now is new and therefor unreliable.
Well, let`s put it this way Whirlpool had decades of time to copy an customize a system for their own needs and hopefully make it as reliable as it is in Europe and anywhere else.

It's really only one series of DWs where I ever heard of issues with diverters - and that's some WP built US designs.

It's not that it never happened - but it's exceedingly rare.
It's just a small, synchronous motor and a few switches.
And that's basically all you need to save 30% or more in water and similar amounts in energy.

And it's not like you can't run all arms at once either.
That's what variable speed pumps are for, honestly.
You got time? Alternate & lower pump rpm.
You want it done fast? All arms at once, high pump rpm.
You need it scoured? Alternate and high rpm.

Whenever other alternatives exist most Europeans consider anything plastic inferior, cheap and tacky. Be it dishwasher tubs, Tupperware containers or God forbid plastic tumblers (yuck).
Plastic attracts oils and soil and can emit nasties like plasticizers whereas stainless steel and glass are considered clean.
We`ve had plastic interior dish washers too but they vanished from the marked in the 1970s. The cost cutting plastic bottoms we see now again is a step back not everyone is happy to see.
Call it cultural differences. LOL
Agreed.
In fact, it's 2025, and there's an alarming number of Americans in my place of work who still microwave heat up their lunches in plastic tupperware. With the iconic "bubbly plastic" ring around the sides.

Best inexpensive dishwasher

Reply number 21 while I agree these inexpensive whirlpool and Amana dishwashers are very good deal for the money. They do not clean better or last longer than the high-end whirlpool product.

Yes, I like the simplicity of them but they use very cheap wet motors like Bosch and they don’t last that long. They also don’t have nylon racks so the racks tend to get rusty pretty quickly.

Whirl pool did have trouble with their first diverter design with leaks at the diverter shaft seal that were redesigned quite a few years ago and I’ve never seen one leak since.

All the Maytag and the premium KitchenAid dishwashers have a much more rugged motor that does not have wet bearings. The motor will last the life of the machine. I’ve never seen one fail.
