Black Friday

Did anyone go Black Friday shopping this year? I stayed home most of the day but went out in the evening to run a few errands. The traffic by then was not bad. I stopped at Walmart to get a few things not related to the sales. I noticed they had an entire endcap with white plastic Sunbeam Mixmaster stand mixers with a big sign with $49.99 over them.

Also stopped at Home Depot but again traffic no worse than usual.

I think the day is not as big as it was before because of the sales being spread out before and after the day.

Was Black Friday a big thing before the late 2000s? Seems I heard of it mostly starting around 2007-08. I know it must have been happening earlier but I don't remember all of the hoopla about it before then. There also didn't seem to be as many ads coming in the newspaper this year. It used to a bigger pile.

I avoided it like the plague. I tried going out once and never again.

It was until maybe 10 years ago nothing much in Canada and I can't remember it ever being a big deal across the river in Michigan years ago . Whereas Boxing Day was the big day here and in other commonwealth countries. But then Boxing Day became Boxing week and Boxing Month and Boxing Day in July it sort of lost it appeal and then of course online shopping

Stay home during Black Friday,Blue Monday-or whatever it is called-Would like to see a stop to this nonsense.Remember years ago all this wasn't promoted.Just gets folks in tizzys we don't need.

The only shopping I did Black Friday was for groceries. I have to say the experience had a huge plus--both stores were surprisingly quiet for Friday, although some items were sold out (probably due to Thanksgiving).

That's right did my grocery shopping on that "Friday" only place I went to.

I Did Get

a Brother P-Touch label maker for $9.99 on line at Office Depot. My Dymo had died a few months ago and actually looked at this same Brother for $39.99 only about a month ago and had put off purchasing 'cause I was buying a new computer. So, I didn't have to deal with stupid crowds or any of that and got it for 1/4 of what it had been on sale for.

Only once right after I got crippled up did I go to Black Friday at Target at, I think, around 5am. Bunch of crap. The problem is, I've got a huge house full of stuff I don't need right now--so why buy more? The main things the big stores sell on that day are electronics and toys and stuff that I don't need anyway. And I don't like fighting crowds.

Was going to do a total boycott of black friday

But ended up buying a coat, a pair of shoes and two shirts.  All things I needed, really.

 

And one thing I didn't need, the limited edition blu-ray of "9 to 5" from Twilight Time.  I still can't fathom it will be 37 years since I first saw this with my family on Christmas Day in 1980.

Macy's had some incredible deals so I ventured out. It wasn't really crowded when I went at 9:30am and was able to get in and out in an hour. I think I dropped about $300 and was able to complete 90% of my Christmas list

I went to Menard's and Target; both in the later evening when most people were already "shopped out". No big crowds then at either.

A lot of people are drawn to the sales on "Black Friday" like moths to a porch light.... "Oh I got a 60" TV for $150 and a 17" laptop for $50!!!" Sure they can be some great deals out there, but are YOU willing to camp out all night, waiting in line outside some store to get those deals? I'm sorry but I don't need anything THAT BADLY and .... I have better things to do.
