How strange is that? I had a bad night at ork last night and decided as we are now a 24hr Lquor license Tesco I would buy a bottle or 2 of something to have when I got in.

Im off my wine for a bit and im in love with these as my winter bevvies LOL

Pimms and Lemonade and Stones with Canada Dry, mmmmmm

although I am partial to a Whisky Mac too as you can see hehehehe

Back to Bold

Ive always found it shocking that people buy it,

when I was a chef i used to use whichever detergent our dry goods supplier sent us unless I requested it was Persil specifically, more often than not it was Bold.

When used in the specified dosages it does not clean anywhere near Persils standards for a much smaller dose and I regularly had to bleach the white waiters towels to remove a grey film Bold instilled in them.

The chef towels we used as oven cloths were SHOCKING. it got to the point where I bought a whole load of new ones and used Persil NB on them full stop.

Even Ariel and Daz are nowhere near Persil FWIW so why they have a following is beyond me.......

Ariel

I can't stand the new scent of ariel biological, its very overpowering, i cannot even use comfort or lenor as the scent overpowers that as well, i miss the old formulation of ariel, before they changed the packaging, ariel colour powder still smells the same tho, same scent as the old ariel bio. I'm using persil for whites, and aldis almat colour liquid on darks (i find this is very good value for 1.89 a bottle, and its made in germany!) I use bold too sometimes on sheets, (the lavender and camomile tablets) these smell amazing. My favourite conditioners will always be Comfort concentrates, original and lily and riceflower fragrances.

Its amazing how detergents change over time, i remember my mum used to use Bold spring fresh powder and Daz Automatic, and i remember these used to clean really well at low temperatures. I don't use daz anymore as i find it doesn't remove stains well at 40 degrees, i have to wash at 60 or even 90 to get the stains out, and this isn't ideal for clothes that can't be washed at that temperature. its persil or surf for me all the way. Surf Tropical is a good budget detergent for good whites. and if you want something cheap to protect your colours i highly recommend Aldi Almat Colour Liquid.

P.S does anyone know what the error message E90 means on a Zanussi washing machine? i keep getting it coming up when i press the on/off button

and I also dont understand why ALL of P and Gs products have such a strong scent.

Im sure its to scam people into thinking their washing is clean, Imagine it and the Psychological theory im hinting at here.

Housewife opens the washer door and is greeted by a wonderfully strong smell, already she thinks her washing is extra clean, and when she glances at it not particularly paying attention due to the fact she is basking in the scent she thinks its clean.

In fact its not, she has been conned.

Lever dont highly scent their products because they work first time round. BTW my laundry is always impeccably clean despite the fact I heavily use softener, I kinda use FS as a scent/cologne/musk whatever and I like a lasting scent because Im conscious of being and smelling clean. but it would not bother me to omit the FS and spray myself with an EDT.

Sadly I cant find one that smells of Comfort Easy Iron tho LOL

but anyhoo my 5pence piece now LOL

Daz

I remember daz before the packaging changed, it had a wonderful scent, used to remind me of my brothers house, as he lived in the countryside, and i remember me staying at his house in 2002, when i was 15, hanging his sheets and teatowels out after doing them at 40 degrees with Daz in his Hottie 9530, which he still has , the scent was fantastic and it reminded me of the countryside and amazing everything was clean at 40 degrees, programme [5] on the hottie

Irish version of the tablets

I suspect the major reason for the difference in the Irish and UK versions of the tablets is that Ireland has tighter control of phosphates and nitrates for environmental reasons. Algael blooms are taken rather seriously as they can destroy lakes, rivers and do serious economic damage to some rural areas that would have large industries built around water-based tourism. We're green enough without going as far as having green lakes.

The UK tabs contain phosphates, the Irish ones appear not to.

Also, some P&G and Unilever products here are sourced in other countries that use the Euro, rather than the UK. It makes significantly more economic sense. So, it's quite possible that P&G or Unilever's Irish subsiduary is using products that are part of the French, German or other Euro distribution network.
e.g. many products are sold in "EuroSmart" value packs.

In general, IRL has quite a few more environmental controls than the UK. E.g. plastic bags are taxed at 15cents per item (moving up to 25 cents). Recycling is pretty much compulsary as you're charged by weight or volume (per KG) for non recyclable collection. If you don't recycle, you pay quite heavily.

In our area there is a microchip in the handle of the trash can (wheelie bin) when the bin's lifted the truck weighs the contents and you're invoiced every 3 months.
The green bin (Recyclables) and the Brown Bin (compostables) are collected for free.

To avoid issues like neighbours dumping stuff into other's bins. They have gravity locks! i.e. there's a lock in the lid that will only open with a key or if the bin's fully inverted by the truck during emptying.

If you put the wrong items into the wrong bin you can end up having your collection service withdrawn or really large fines.

We're rapidly turned into a bunch of northern european tightasses when it comes to such issues.

You should see the looks you get in a supermarket if you ask for bags!!
You get a look from old ladies in the queue behind you and the check out people like as if you'd asked for some extra veal to go with your freshly clubbed baby seal.

That and smoking in any enclosed space (other than your own private home) is illegal and we've a €3000 fine to back that up. What's worse (for smokers, of which I am not one) - The ban is extremely popular.
Bars, cafés, restaurants, etc etc are all 100% smoke free.

I've been using Bold recently, as some of you already know, and I've actually found it to be a very impressive product. Rinses out *way* better than Ariel - with the liquid and liquitabs the first and second rinses are *clear*, and that's with the default 2 rinses on the Miele without water plus selected. There is little smell left over on the laundry afterwards either - it rinses out just as well as Persil powders! (i.e. it can fully rinse out even with the default rinse cycles, with other detergents I always have to use water plus).

Bold is definitely unlike other P&G products, in that it rinses out well and hardly sudses at all - maybe because of the added fabric softener. BTW, Nick, I haven't had to rewash anything when using Bold as of yet, and I ran a little test on whites the other weekend and Bold actually got white socks cleaner than the same dose of Persil bio! (I was shocked, too!). I also have a box of Fairy liquitabs at the moment, and I used them the other day and they were atrocious for sudsing & rinsing as are most other P&G products, though the P&G liquids tend to be good.

Bold is a nice laundry product, and I would definitely rank it up there with Persil as a good general detergent. Only Ocean Clear and Apple Blossom & Lime Zest for me though - not too keen on the other two flavours! I've found that the liquid & liquitab versions soften well, but the powder doesn't really make any difference over any other brand in terms of softening. I would definitely recommend Bold, anyway, alongside with Persil powder & tabs.

Ariel used to be my daily driver, but since they went to the new logo I've noticed that rinsing performance & smell has definitely got downhill - bring back the grass scented Ariel!

Sainsbury's detergents

As many others know here, the Sainsbury's Perform & Protect line replaced Sainsbury's Novon I believe... they sell German (Henkel) Persil but under their own brand. Unfortunately the megaperls have been discontinued (I love them - will be stocking up when I'm in Amsterdam in February!), but they still sell the liquid, liquitabs, softeners, and tablets.

Ownbrands

It seems that a company called McBride, the same people who make Surecare and Clean n' Fresh do the ownbrand stuff for quite a lot of the major supermarkets.

e.g. I suspect all the Tesco products, M&S etc .. they're all identically packaged.

A good way to tell which mfgr is making which product is to compare the packaging and coding....the design of the package (flap design, for instance) and how are any lot codes attached (dot matrix printed versus pressed/embossed into the box, what is the bottle design, ...
