Brady Bunch House ?

I was flipping through the TV the other day and I stopped on Brady Bunch. I haven't seen it in forever but I always LOVED the Brady House. I thought it was so functional aside from me not really liking the paneling. But can someone answer two questions for me about the house?

A) What is that behind Mike and Carol's Bed? Those weird white panels? They almost look FIXED and can't be removed. What is this called?

B) What was the square hole in the kitchen beside the ovens?

The square thing beside the oven is an indoor grill built into the chimmny. I've always loved the idea of an indoor grill like this

Mike & Carol's Bedroom

I wonder if that is a privacy screen to a master bath. If you look at the screen you see that it doesn't come all the way down to the shelf that is behind their bed. There is a small gap and it looks like something is behind it.

You do see either one of them coming out of "their" bathroom at times. But you never see an inside shot of it. The entry being just right of the bed.

The Brady house is one of my favorites too...as was the house in Hart to Hart LOL. What is that green thing on the kitchen counter? Looks like an appliance of some sort. I remember an episode where they were doing laundry...but I have no idea what kind of washer they had.

The green box looks like it could be a bread box? That cooktop seems odd with the burners spaced out and nothing in between. I remember they had an avocado Americana side by side with dispensers. Our kitchen had that same orange formica countertops and the cabinets were laminate with orange and green in the wood pattern. Going off topic, sorry.

It's ok to talk about any part of the house

I know in later seasons the ovens and the cook top went to stainless. I think that green thing is a bread box. I just noticed the screen thing isn't 100% down, so it does look like you can lower it or raise it up - but it's still weird! Why would they need a screen there and not just the regular wall. It must just be merely for some decoration or something.

Avocado and orange kitchen... and a 71 Satellite wagon... doesn't get more 70s than that! But I would have thought with such a colorful kitchen that Carol would have chosen a more brilliantly colored wagon than tan-beige! Green or gold metallic were really popular colors!

Next To Darrin and Samantha's house

Mike and Carol Brady's place was my favourtie growing up.

Never mind the exterior shots of either matched what went on inside.

Could never understand why Mike and Carol remained in that house after blending families. Six children especially made up of three girls (soon to be teenagers) sharing one bathroom with three boys (ditto) was a recipe for disaster. Especially since it was so small.

Recall in some sort of woman's study class taken in college (easy "A" fluff for credits), the topic came up just what did Carol Brady do with herself all day? At least Samantha Stephens was seen doing housework, cooking and eventually had two young children. Mrs. Brady rarely cooked, can never recall her as much as picking up a dust cloth and her children were all grade and or high school age.

Yes, you often did see her helping Alice carry groceries, but still

closets for the kids that are in no way shape or form realistic size wise for clothes.

Any why did Alice get such a dinky room when she lived there full time? Hell, Mike's den alone could hold 6 beds, if not more.

And you would think they would have had a bodacious Magnavox console tube instead of the portable.

What about the kitchen table? How can the entire family sit there for breakfast or were they supposed to feedbag in the dining room?

Did Carol have supersize washer or a std capacity unit?

Any why no dishwasher? Cleaning up for NINE people in the kitchen one would think they would have a bodacious dishwasher (that actually used water).

I grew up with five sisters and two brothers. My brothers and I shared the downstairs bedroom. Two sisters shared a very small upstairs bedroom set up with a bunk-bed, while three sisters shared the larger upstairs bedroom. All of us would have liked our own rooms but it wasn't possible. No one complained about it. I recall in later episodes that Greg made a room for himself up in the attic, but truthfully their room sharing arrangements seemed perfectly normal to me. And come to think of it, most of the friends I had were sharing rooms as well. But then the neighborhoods we lived in were developed in the teens through the nineteen thirties. Houses were smaller. Closets were smaller. Multiple bathrooms were scarce, but it all seemed perfectly normal to us and still does, at least to me. The modern trend of giant houses on very small lots just makes me stare in disbelief. So while I always found the Brady bunch house to be ugly both inside and out, I never questioned its size or layout. Wait. I take that back. I always questioned the giant vaulted ceiling in the living room, never liked that feature at all.

Something isn't right here. Alice and Carol enter the laundryroom through a door opposite of the washer and dryer, right? On the floorplan that is the door of Alice's bedroom, not the door to the kitchen.

the only "logical" reason why no dishwasher was that sitcoms didn't usually have dishwashers is still in the late 1960s dishwashers were still somewhat a luxury.  I don't recall seeing dishwashers as part of show set kitchens until The Partridge Family; Maude; and The Jeffersons.  Even though "Mike" was likely a successful architect, he had a wife, 6 kids, and Alice to support and before the women moved in, it was a bachelor pad house with Alice taking care of them.  The exception to this was Bewitched, but Darren was an extremely successful advertising agency individual and he had to entertain clients at his and Samantha's house and that had to portray him being successful.

Also, since the Bradys had domestic help (Alice) Mike didn't spend much on the kitchen. Kind of like the way at Fallingwater, it has/had a dinky apartment kitchen because the Kaufmanns had "help".

Studios often look for ways to cut costs and perhaps the divider behind the Mike and Carols bed was probably found in a Paramount prop building. If it fit, they used it.

Another thing that is not realistic is there is a fireplace in the living room, but there is no chimney above it so in reality it would have to be a fake fireplace.

Oddly enough, the bricks used on the Brady house look less fake than the ones on Gunsmoke.

Alright he had Alice. But he added 4 more mouths to feed. That alone is enough evidence he SHOULD have sucked up to Mr Philips and snagged a bonus instead of buying a 4 seat barracuda in later seasons, a wonky boat in season 4, or accepted a friggin pool table in season 5.

Yeeesh, come on Mr Brady, you can do better than that!

I usually like analyzing tv sets/situations, but something about the Bradys just makes me want to heave.

 

I think I prefer the Brady movies better, where Marsha and Greg move to the non-existant attic and have a thing for each other, amongst other funny yet real stuff.

Quite honestly

Brady Bunch never grabbed me in the way Bewitched and a few other sitcoms did; found it boring and too "white bread" (no offense). Like an updated version of Ozzie and Harriet really. About the only risqué topic covered is when everyone thought something was "wrong" with one of the boys because he wanted to study ballet. Turns out the kid only wanted to take classes because a girl he liked was doing so and he wanted to get close.

Speaking of Bewitched; not to hijack this tread but caught an early episode of the Twilight Zone last night on MeTV.

Entitled "Static" it featured a younger (and much heavier) Alice Pearce. Because of the weight her chin wasn't as prominent as during the Bewitched years. In fact knowing what we know now (the woman was diagnosed with cancer but kept it a secret and worked literally until she died from the disease), you can see the weight loss.

But we just never saw it as the dishwashing area was not shown. I'll back this with the fact that I never saw Alice doing dishes. With that many mouths to feed I hope she had a DW. At least she had double ovens LOL.

The cabinets in that kitchen were AWFUL.  Add in the burnt orange counters, and you have a recipe for indigestion.

 

Just the thought of sliding particle board cabinet doors, with finger holes, and knowing how easily the track can get clogged with crumbs, makes me ..... want to heave.  .... or at least not want to eat in such a room.

I rarely watched TBB for much the same reasons. 

 

I'm surprised nobody has remarked about the heavenly light beaming down into what's supposed to be a chimney for the kitchen grille.  That would be one really short chimney.

Also notice

the kitchen has TWO SINKS - one on the back counter by the wall, then the other main sink. Surely the dishwasher was hidden behind the counter.

So they slapped a fake window on the front of the exteriors they used of the house? So does this mean that Paramount owned the actual exterior Brady House at the time? I was under the impression that they picked a home to use for exterior shots, but they never really used the home other than that, and that someone else probably actually lived there.

Boy, TV can really mess with your head. I just looked something up and read that the staircase lead to no where! They went up the stairs and around the corner to nothing. LOL - All bedrooms were filmed on a sound stage.

I always watched the re-runs on superstation TBS. So I have seen TBB many times, but I find it a LOT harder to watch now than then. But I still watch it sometimes for nostalgia. In fact, there was one episode that I watched recently that I had never seen, and I thought I had seen them all. It was when the kids thought Alice was snitching on them and they all gave her the cold shoulder so she left and got a job at a restaurant.

I wondered what Carol did with herself all day too. I think she must have helped Alice, was a member of the PTA, things like that. I think she must have HAD to help Alice since that's too many people for one person to do everything for.

I LOVED the Brady Bunch Movie from 1995 - I was in the theater and I remember people ROTFLOL so many times.

Very common with sitcoms back then.

When Bewitched got a new kitchen courtesy of a fire that destroyed the old set a staircase was added to the kitchen. However it lead no where, and if you watch Sam or anyone else that went up it you can see them sort of crouch down.
