"OK, somebody said that membership would include something like
a complete set of full color, laminated pictures of Robert, in a thong, displaying certain washers and appliance of his collection. Did I understand that correctly?"

I would LOVE to see those! ;-)

Robert does the upgrade include using https or SSL for log in session? I hope no one spoofs my session.

Yes the login session to upgrade is run by paypal not me. Its address is https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr. The link just takes you over to Paypal's donation system via https. Paying a small fee to paypal is much easier than trying to write all that secure code custom.

Oh, Maybe I should clearify then, I figured the paypal side used https and some other things because of the bank account, credit card stuff. I was refering to logging into AW.org since it keeps you logged in for ~1 week. The reason why I bring this up is because the email account on my profile was hacked a few days ago, so now I'm very concerned about the spoofing sessions and stuff by rogue bots. So my next question is, With the upgraded AW account, can I block my address from being displayed to non AW members?

With the upgraded AW account, can I block my address from being displayed to non AW members?

Oh so you're talking about your email address being display in your profile. Actually I had been planning for a while to add a check box in everyone's profile so the user can decided whether they want their email address displayed to everyone or not when their profile is viewed. This feature will go out to all members so its not something you will need to be upgraded for. I should have that done this week or next week.

Well, I've thought about it. ...

I don't mind paying $12 for THE SITE. And I know, Robert, you have worked very hard on setting up this site.

If one stands back and looks at it, now, its as if there is something that we appliance afficiendos have to hide.
It also, by default, cheapens what the site was set up for-Appliances.
Afterall, anyone can view information on that at this point.

I've always thought there should be a division between those simply looking for advice on how to repair their appliance, and those of us whom this is our hobby. Those just looking for advice will come back a few times and probably never return. They should have an easy format to ask a question and those who want to help, can advise. Maybe even charge a small fee for that.

I feel the site should look like one of these:

1. entire site one needs to subscribe to with a mere sample on the homepage. And this is where visitors could ask service questions and people could see what the site is about.

2. people need to subscribe to the APPLIANCE FORUMS(not the personals section) because, afterall, that is what the site is about.

or

3. open the way it was.

"Think how many members we would have still around had this been put into place already.......too many have been run off for various reasons...controversy, personal attacks, forced opinions, etc.---it has happened too many times---this is a little more controlling as well as a persons own self control...thats one of the reasons Robert had to do this, and we thank him for it.... "

What? I'm sure you didn't mean that to sound like THAT.
Robert isn't a babysitter. Nor should we expect him to be.
Personal "attacks" happen daily, to everyone. Usually it isn't intentional. Why would we expect anything different here?

The thing is, I don't ever remember anything SO BAD happening on this site. We have had spats for sure. That happens in real life. So?

Has anyone ever written here something like:
corralling people to create a terrorist incident?
Spoke about molesting children?
Blogged about planning a murder or bank robbery?
I don't remember anything like that. And if they did, most all of us here would take immediate action to have the issue remedied.
I have been a member here on and off for the last 8 years. If Ive missed something, someone fill me in.

I think there is too much effort going into some areas and not others. There is an Appliance Library on the front page which has not been updated in how many years?

When I first joined the site, there was an obvious bias by certain members who thought their ideal appliances, from the 1950s, were the ONLY valid appliances to pursue (typical self-centered, "the world revolves around us", babyboomers) ...and shame on those who desired something Avacodo or from the 1980's, or anything else. Well, its an appliance website, not limited to appliances from the 1950s. I've pushed past that nonsense. Others can too.
The issue that happened recently with Mark Lightedcontrols, acting as Robert described, is not something anyone should feel bad about. That attitude where one thinks they can get what they want because they have money... No.

I think, Robert, your going in the right direction. Perhaps it is my irrepressibility, but I won't be in the closet about my appliance interests, being gay, being progressive, etc.
I am not ashamed of any ideas I've written here (though my spelling hasn't always been the best and I could have been a bit more courteous)
and more importantly, I have never seen anything written here by others that is worth feeling shame or fear over.
I don't think that was the intent when you made the changes.

I would like to contribute my fee, but at this point, the way it is set up... Not so much. If there is a facet i'm not seeing, let me know.

Visa debit card

Hello all,
I am having the same problem as Joe in Philly, I am getting the same message from Paypal when I try to donate using my Visa debit card,I wonder if perhaps Paypal do not recognise Visa debit cards as they are not actual credit cards, would anyone know if I am doing something incorrectly?, many thanks.
Steve.

I raise my virtual glass to you Robert, just a quick question on the Super archives, and I apologize if it's been asked already, did you not save the pictures to save on server space? I'm reading the 2006 vac convention thread and there are posts "here's a shot/pic of so and so with this Hoover, Eureka, etc...." and there's just blank space.

Hi Alex, yes for quite a few years I had to take off the Super Forum posts and archive them locally on my computer's hard drive. It was costing too much money to use all of that hard drive space at the ISP. Unfortunately I had a hard drive crash on that computer. I was able to save all of the actual threads, but about a year and half worth of Super Forum pictures were sporadically lost. I believe its around the 2006 time period.

A few other members might have archived Super Forum pictures locally on their hard drive and might be able to donate them back to the site.
