I just uploaded some significant behind the scene code changes to the Discuss-o-Mat. I'm moving the system from a more vintage 2003 file-based system to a more modern 2010 data-base system.

There will most definitely be some bugs that need to be ironed out, especially around the ' character if you choose to use it anywhere. If you notice anything strange please post it in this thread or email me at [email protected].

Thanks everyone, changes will be made slowly but surely over the next coming months. You wont notice much at first as most will be behind the scenes, but this change today was the biggest I made in years.

Robert

Eyes are open and fingers at the ready!

Thanks for your continued perserverence, patience and on-going work on the site so that we may continue to learn from it, grow with it and, most importantly, enjoy it.

HI Robert!

Moving from vintage to modern... in the Discuss-o-mat ?!? =/

I'm sure everything will be working wonderfully though ! =)

Uh huh, just like the 28 50+ year old washers in my basement ***back of hand on forehead***

Robert, is it just my system, or is text on the forum index pages a bit smaller now?

Good question Jeff, it looks exactly the same to me on all computers that I have access to.

Compare OLD and NEW, do you all see any difference. It might be your older operating system Jeff.

If others think it is too small to read easly I can increase the size, but its going to be larger than the OLD page as there seems to be no in-between with browser based font sizes.

Robert, here's a side-by-side as it displays on my system. It looks like the font size is the same, but for some reason the text isn't quite as clear on the new page.

Not a big deal at all, it's still very readable.

Yes, I notice a small change in the look and size of the text between the old and new. Minor at best, but the old is more pleasant looking. Is it the type size? Kerning( I remember playing with that in Publisher years ago...)? Something is just a bit off.

Firefox 3.6 on windows 7....

On your system Jeff if you look closely you can see that those are not the same fonts, they look different. On mine they are exactly the same. Well maybe its time for an index page redesign anyway. Funny to me the screen shots you posted makes the newer page look easier to read.

Hmmm... It's type size.

I lined up the top post "Bug report #2" with the top of my browser window in the "Old' and "New" versions. In the old it ends with "Carrie Fisher writes her Memoir's", in the new I get 2/3 of the following line "Originally posted 02/16/2010 at 10:35"

Matt, that was my fault, I didn't capture the full screen on the second page. The type sizes are exactly the same.

Robert, please don't spend any time on this, at least on my account. My system is ancient and I've got a bazillion different fonts installed, from 100 different sources. Some of these fonts suck, and I think Helvetica Sans Serif is one of them.

The main difference is in the capital letters, they're a bit shorter on the new page. Not a big deal. I think I have 4 or 5 different flavors of Helvetica Sans Serif fonts on my system, I'll try different ones.

I had just signed in and noticed that the text or something looked smaller. Went to my "view" to enlarge it like it was before but it's still showing on the largest setting.. so yeah it is a smaller. If you can enlarge it yay.. otherwise I might have to put my glasses on and I don't like wearing my glasses. People don't know me with glasses and if I post something whilst wearing them they may think I'm an imposter posing as me.

How about it now???

Well I just made it the next size up. See what I mean, there is a large difference between the original size and the next size up. But maybe its more readable this way to those on different systems.
