There is a whirlpool Cabrio at a salon I clean( don't have the model number right now) that is around 4 or 5 years old. For awhile it has not been filling by sensing but rather a higher default level.
This morning on the super wash cycle it was making some different sounds rhythmically. Opened it up to find small mildew specks all over the balance ring and junk in the water. From what I can see peeking through the inch of lid I can raise, the impeller was going in one direction, tub movement was erratic, water was splashing up. Thought it may be trying to spin and wash at the same time but I think with the water rotating in one direction, when you hit stop the water causes the tub to turn and had to wait for it to stop before the lid would unlock. But it didn't do it on a regular cycle or the bulky cycle. Tried the super wash again after the other two, same thing. The mold issue I figured it knocked it loose then splashed it up. I know there is mildew growing around the balance rings and tub. I've run bleach through the clean washer cycle and have poured the solution over the balance ring in the past. They only wash in cold but the hot is not even Luke warm. So what could be causing the erratic wash motions? I can't remember what it was, but a few weeks ago it acted weird on a drain and spin cycle. But it only did it once so just thought it was a fluke. Figure it's time is limited and will suggest she get a speed queen. I'll post the model number tomorrow when I go up. Might can get a little video through the crack.

Cabrio were the WORST whirlpool product made. mine after a few years had to be serviced to the point where i gave up and bought a Samsung front load.

John,

my belt driven Maytag Bravos X does exactly the same. It's 51/2 years young.
I also never know if it will spin on high anymore. It has a mind of it's own.
I suspect the Cabrio and Bravos XL direct drives use the same pressure sensor for water level, and even encoder and controller. Maybe different calibrations for either the 3.6 or 4.5 cubic ft. sizes.
The other day, I set it on the wrinkle control cycle, and it paused and soaked like on hand wash. It also filled half full of water on both wash and rinse.
Normal cycle fills half full for wash, but only spray rinses unless extra rinse is selected.
First Whirlpool product I have been disappointed with.
Rest assured I won't replace it with one.
The gear case and bearings were redone winter before last already. It has not been overloaded, or heavily used. Six to eight loads per week. Three person household.

Almost forgot,

also on Normal, it static fills for the wash, as if on hand wash. No more slow spin fill. Same fore wrinkle control cycle.
I have ran it through the recalibration operation as prescribed by the service tech. periodically. Made no difference.

2010 model year.  Produced 5th week of 2011.

I don't have direct experience with these machines but some trouble points I've seen discussed:

- The anchor bolt loosens on the main drive pulley (needs blue Loctite on it to secure better?).

- The mode shifter, which includes RPM sensor, is bad (although that usually throws a fault code).

mine had a bad cap on the PC board

a 2010 VMW cabrio I bought for repair had a bad capacitor on the control board-caused among other effects, motor to buzz and get hot as it tried to start.

There are 2 screws to remove on the back, and then remove that small cover. Slide the top forward 1/2 ish inch, and lift the lid. The tech manual is glued to the front panel in a bag. It will tell you everything you need to know.

Service mode is : rotate knob ccw to reset control. Right right right left right. All LEDs start to flash upon success

Yes, actuator

is mode shifter. It was replaced when gear case was changed. I have no fault codes, never have.
Extended warranty gone now, I will do no further repairs.
Yesterday, aside from the static fill, it spun on high as selected. Has a mind of it's own. We'll use it until it stops working or bearings get too loud again.
Gear case clicked upon spin slow down before the overhaul.

The belt-drive VMW design for the Cabrio, while fairly mechanically simple, was never a good choice for the HE versions of WP's washers. It works brilliantly for the conventional agitator models like my WTW4800, which is basically a DirectDrive from back in the day only with a more modern look and the drive system you have in this machine. The reason it was horrible as a wash plate model is the lack of water level control and a very simple, ineffective load sensing system, along with the added stress on the splutch and gear case because of low water washing.

The true Cabrio's design is nothing at all like the machine you have here, aside from cosmetic similarities, which consequently has started this confusion between the two machines, and has tarnished the reputation of the true Cabrio/Oasis/Bravos XL designs, which are very well designed and work beautifully when used properly.

Your service manual for this machine may actually be attached to the front left of the cabinet, on the interior of the machine. You should be able to look under the lid opening and see it adhered in a little plastic envelope. The sequence that Lorainfurniture described is the same as my 4800, and should be for your machine as well because they share the same control board.

At $40-50 dollars for the shift actuator, and with the simplicity of the replacement process, in my opinion it's not a bad idea to repair so long as the machine has no other mechanical issues. They aren't terrible washers despite what some would say, but you just have to make sure not to overload, and because of using it in a salon setting, just keep it set at the Hot setting with any extra rinse options you can use. Even if the water is tempered down, warm water is better than cold for keeping any residues and crud down to a minimum.

When it was new,

the water levels as described in the user guide did work. Just to the top of the impeller cap for normal, or just below for a very light load. Hand was would fill 1/3 full.
Not a bad washer? Just not a very good one either.
My sister in law has the older large DD Cabrio, and says the same. Misses her Kitchen Aids from the late 80's. Her moms got a b.o.l. GE from '98 and will not buy an h.e. top loader because of what she told her.
