Have you ever regrown these from the root? You save a slice of the bottom and put it in some shallow water and wait for the new green growth to emerge then plant the new plants in soil. They are beautiful and you can keep harvesting from the new growth. It helps eliminate the feeling of waste you get when you throw out the roots. Regular onions will give you green shoots from the roots, too. Garlic will grow from a good clove. You can keep harvesting the shoots or fertilize the heck out of it and have a great big bunch of cloves at the end of the summer. Just be sure to buy the California garlic with the roots and not the stuff from China with no roots grown in all of that pollution over there.
