Does anyone have a good idea of the time frame when appliance cords converted from being cloth covered to vinyl? I'm guessing it was the mid to late 50's, doubtful into the 60's. I picked up an HB two slice toaster with a cloth cord, the toaster itself you would figure is still new but I remember our old GE toaster back home era 1956 and it had a vinyl cord but moms Sunbeam iron had a cloth cord.

cords

There seemed to be a "transition" period where both types were used, can't quite deterime what that period was, though.

at least into the late '70s

I remember when I'd go to the hardware store with my dad, I would always end up in the electrical aisle. They always had a good stock of cloth replacement cords for small appliances, although these may have been on the shelf for awhile. This would have been '78-'80 or so. I don't remember any new appliances having them, however.

Only heat-producing appliances had these cords. Lamps and other appliances once had cords with some sort of textile fiber, but these went out in the '30s AFAIK.
