As I've stated before on more than one occasion, I take my laundry to a laundromat to have it washed. My preference in washers is the older model Maytag top loaders.

I need to pay closer attention to the timer on the machine the next time I do laundry. It seems the rinse cycle is not over 3-4 minutes (agitating), if that. When there's a good sized load being washed, how are the clothes supposed to turn over in that short time period and get an adequate rinsing?

Is this common on home Maytag's and commercial models? I've noticed this on both old and new machines at various laundromats.

Also, the newer commercial top loaders don't fill up all the way like the older ones do. On both wash and rinse cycles, they lack roughly a gallon or so of water.

Depends on the model. If it is a computer control, the rinse time (and number of rinses) can be modified by the owner. The setting from the factory is 1 rinse for 1 minute. Since "time is money", most owners do not change the factory settings. The programmable options are for 1 or 2 rinses, and for 1, 2 or 3 minutes. If it is an older machine with the fabri-matic dial, the timer is electromechanical and cannot be modified.

Mine are reset for 3 minutes.

Yeah I think the older model ones, with the long and slower agitation stroke have always rinsed for what seems like a very short time. If that's the ones you're using. Even the home models from years ago rinsed for I believe 90 seconds.
