The agitator you're talking about is commonly called a "burpalator". In the full size machines the "burpies" (for short) have four straight vanes on them. As the machine agitates it forces water up thru channels built into it and spray water into the filter pan.
Since this is a smaller machine it only has a three vane agitator. But, it does "burp" like it's bigger sister. So maybe they call this agitator either
"L'il Burpie" or Baby Burpie".
If you watch the video that Malcolm posted (thread #5) you can see it in action and hear it as well if you listen closely.

Norge 21" Compact Washer
Many, Many Thanks Justin for rescuing this washer for the appliance museum, it will join its long lost cousin a 21" TOL Montgomery Wards white gas dryer. I have long sought a TOL Norge built 21" mate for the dryer.
These were a cool set of compacts that Norge built in the early 1970s, they were the smallest fully automatic washer and dryer pair ever manufactured in the US. The dryers came in both gas and electric, and the electric dryers were field convertible from 120 to 240 volts, [ which is something that I wish WP had done with their 24" dryers ].
Norge claimed that these machines would hold and wash&dry 10 pounds of laundry, but 6Lbs is probably much closer to what you should actually wash in one load.
The little washer actually used the same big HD transmission and water pump as Norges full sized machines and other basic design elements. The dryer did not share any parts and other design elements with the full sized dryers they were building at the same time, Thank Goodness, LOL.

I grew up with two White Norge 20 Pound Washer and Dryer set Mom bought in 1972.They both were still around till I was out of
College.They cleaned like hell and I still hear that lint trap from that burp a lator in my head now thinking back.
The agitator does not slow down when it went the other way at all it shredded towels and Mom always fussed about her
shirts would pill she even had the shavers for her clothes.Very tough washer when you opened the lid during spin BAM instant stop.
I never see Norge washers for sale in fact I have never seen another one ever around here.Were they made by Fedders for some
reason in my head I am seeing Norge by Fedders or something like that?
