Warning the following is mostly a rant.

I swear I am going to change my screen name if I have one more appliance problem.

This time it's my year old, Well actually for warranty purposes 1 year and 11 day old Maytag 300 series dishwasher is on the fritz.

I had problems with it in March, the machine just started shutting down mid cycle. I could, however, restart it after a few minutes by pushing the cancel button and then re-starting. So I had the service man out, they determined it was the control panel and replaced it under warranty.

So now five months later it did it again last night, only this time it won't restart. It's just dead, and out of warranty. Estimated cost of repair $228. Is five to six months the best one can expect from a Maypool now? All I can say is the Maytag repair man is no longer lonley, poor guy is worked to death. Thanks Whirl-crap.

FYI

For my maytag drying center, the control panel and logic board were considered "electronic" and were therefore warrantied for 60 months.....

perhaps your unit too?

I called the maytag 800 number and they're shipping me parts.

Don't lose the book!

As a general rule, units made 2005 (letter G) or earlier are 1 yr labor, 2 yrs pts with longer on electronics, etc, etc. Machines made 2006 (letter J) or later have a 1 year Pts & Lbr wtty ONLY. (INCL. sealed system!) Some Jennair still had the better wttys. Your warranty book is the bible. If it gives you the longer warranty, great! The spin on this was that warranty terms were being 'standardized' thruout the industry to avoid customer confusion...

Thanks RCD

My warranty book says 1 year parts and labor only. No other provisions.

I will credit Maypool with the fact the lady on the help line was very nice and very good at problem solving. Since my machine was 9 days out of warranty, she offered me the option of purchasing the extended warranty which will replace the unit if they are unable to repair it. She will schedule the service in 48 hours after they back date the warranty records. This was very nice rather than say "Too bad it's out of warranty." I only had to pay the one year at this time which was $42.07, I have to option to extend it longer anytime within the next year and they will look at it as if it was never out of warranty.

In my book this beats the $228 estimate. I'm willing to hand wash for a while until it can be repaired. I had a Maypool repairman (Not the lonley guy) tell me that Whirl-crap is having alot of problems with their electronics on washers, dishwashers, dryers, stoves; just bad electronics being their weakest point.

This can be verified on epinions as well. Every comment is "I loved the machine until. . . burned out."

Good Fix

I had the same thing happen with Maytag on an Amana Dryer back in 2004, they would not warranty the dryer after it had 3 repairs or call it a lemon. The warranty was out, but they did offer the same pay $45 and get the warranty and then make the call. It was way cheaper and I was impressed with them at that point. I am assuming this is now standard practice.

Well the service man was here yesterday

He didn't know what was wrong, so he is just going to start ordering parts until he replaces the one that caused the unit to die. His words.

Parts are supposed to be in Monday, and he will return Tuesday. Wonderful, two weeks without a dishwasher. . if the control panel and control board are the culprits. Otherwise he has to order more parts. At some point the warranty is going to say replace the machine I think.

Parts Changers... AAAARRRGGG!

Maybe it's just me but I can't stand random changing of parts in the chance the problem gets fixed. It's worse when it's COD as the customer eats it badly. That usually reflects badly on other techs like myself as 'guilt by association'. Was this guy factory auth? All he had to do is call the tech line for support which is way better than doing the 'Great Carnac the Appliance Repairman' bit...

Yes this guy was sent by Maypool. The are actually A&E which I was told does most of the factory stuff.

I personally would have called back the guy who worked on it in March. Problem is the machine is totally dead, it won't do anything. It won't blink a light, hum, smoke or nothing.

I kept telling him the electrical smell was coming from the bottom when it quit, he said there isn't anything under there that would have an effect on it going dead so he is sure it's the control board.

A&E... Sighhhh....

Just a stupid question... Burning smell from under the dishwasher... Unit totally dead... Did anyone actually check behind the magic wiring connection cover? It almost sounds like one of the wire nuts where the power cord mates up with the dishwasher wiring smoked... I see it frequently when the nut isn't tight, overheats and melts but it is the most overlooked solution. Everyone assumes the power cord connections NEVER fail...

that's why electrolux went to the USA...

Thomas,
The machine I threw out of the house after only three weeks of living in the new house was a Frigidaire. The Maytag at least washes the dishes (all of them) when it's running.

Did anyone actually check behind the magic wiring connection

He never even took the bottom off the machine. I did but I didn't see anything. I will look when I get home. Thanks for the insight, I suggested to him to look at the motor. He said that it wouldn't make the entire machine go dead so he didn't look under it. It's a tall tub so a real Beotch to work on.

I took the bottom off

and I didn't see anything. The repairman from A&E is supposed to be back out today between 1 and 5. All I can say is GET IT FIXED I'M TIRED OF HANDWASHING!!!!! It's been almost three weeks already.

First my apologies to Maytag

Second, Kudo's to RCD.
After three weeks without a dishwasher, and $429.38 worth of parts. It wasn't the dishwasher after all. It was the powersource (cord). The Connection nut to the nutral had burned through and shorted out the others.

I have a dishwasher again with all new parts. He was going to report the other repairman who didn't check this out the first time.

Takes a bow...

One of the most common reasons for a dead d/w call but one of the most overlooked. The installer puts on that wire nut but doesn't give it the customary 'tug' to see if the wires will pull out. Welcome back to the wonderfull world of automatic dishwashing!
