I think I got this in the right place since it is a vintage DW

I am wondering about the heating element

I use the whole cycle

it does not run in the rinse and hold part of the cycle

it does run in the wash portion the long interval of the cycle

I watched the dial and it clicks 2 times and then pauses while it heats

then in the next section of the cycle it does not heat it clicked thru that portion of the cycle

the next section I think it does not heat

the last section I think it does heat as the water draining out was hotter than normal

Hopefully someone here who has one can clarify it for me

it had a mechanical dial and 2 push-buttons one for the power and one for the heater

I have a Danby DDW396W.  It operates as you describe.

The Sani (heated) option heats the water to 158°F / 70°C.

The cycle is delayed until a thermostat registers the target water temperature.  Delay occurs in the wash period and possibly on the final rinse ... depends how the timer is designed for the specific model.

Selecting Economy does not heat the water.

Rinse-And-Hold is a quick rinse of a few dirty dishes to be held for a later full load.  It purposely leaves the dishware wet so residual soil doesn't dry/bake-on.  Heating the water higher than the incoming supply temperature isn't necessary, and would be counterproductive to the purpose of Rinse-And-Hold.

my water heater settled down after getting temperamental so i was able to turn up the thermostat

it gives me hot water for the DW and the clothes washers as well

I am going to experiment on it some more

running tests on it

I think it pauses 10 min to heat

I turned up the water heater to 150 degrees I think

well the washers will not complain if they get 150 degree water to them

I also need to get food grade sealant for the DW plastic window

more observation

it heats up to 150 or what the set temp is

pauses in the first wash to heat then advances

I use the full cycle

the 3 rinses I use so my good crate and barrel cusps and saucers get rinsed very well so they do not etch from the DW detergent

In the 3 rinses it heats but does not pause the timer just advances but the heater is on all the time it runs in the 3 rinses

I found out by accident as I left the sani button depressed for the whole cycle
