Daz Handwash &Twin-Tub

Hi,

This may be a pretty silly question considering it contains oxygen-based bleaching agents and brightners but is this stuff safe for use on colours?

I wondered if it still uses the old formulation from back in the days when one powder could really be used on everything without problems. Although it does say not for use on silk and wool. It also does not appear to be phosphated.

I just bought a box and it does claim to provide "brilliant whites and colours" but they'll say anything to get you to buy stuff won't they

Used Ariel Handwash/TT in the Hotpoint TL to wash some darks and didnt notice any fading but then 1 wash wont do much harm I suspect,

I think where washing colours regularly in a twintub/TL or by hand I would use a colour detergent as normal or if you really did want Hi Sudz I would use Stergene.

I dont get Daz'z claims to be good for whites and colours but being budget I doubt it has as much ooomph than Ariel but then who knows?
The box I had was not so hot on whites so I used it at half dose on colours to use it up.

Funnily I got a box of Australian Radiant matic a couple of years ago (still have half the box too) which at the time washed a load of whites in the Hotpoint WM12 and it managed to clean better than Ariel.

Radiant Matic dosnt have bleach in it yet it still managed a decent job.
Think I may dig it out and give it a re test.....

well it would be nice to think it could be used on anything

But it dosen't matter now really, I bought a box of Dreft today, so I can do coloureds and woolens in that and whites in Daz. I'm trying to save money (be tight) and handwash as much as I can whilst at uni. Ofcourse now I have the Spin Dryer it's a lot easier to do so .

I'll probably end up just handwashing delicates and things I need right away when theres not enough other washing to do a full load.

There's only one machine that works properly anyway (a hard mount Wascator). The Commercial Miele and other Wascator (with an Asko style suspension) don't work properly, both have faulty timers and no matter what I say the building owners refuse to get them repaired.

The two Alliance (Speed Queen) front loaders do work, but are pretty poor, especially when it comes to rinsing.

The 3 Alliance Speed Queen dryers take an hour and a half to dry (3 tokens at 50p each) and apart from that are ok if you like you're clothes creased to bits and about 3 sizes smaller than they went in.

There was a time when handwashing was fun to do. Tried doing it and soon appreciated the Dullness of the washer compared to the hands on thing.

Now Handwash as little as possible and only if absolutely neccessary.

The automatic does come in handy with low temp economy washes/gentle action buttons etc probably gentler than what my big hands could achieve.

Then we got the twin tub, handwashing without the hassle.... I think not.
Hands down to my Great Nan who toiled with her Hotpooint 1401 and Liberator Twin tubs.
DOing 1 load is totally knackering after a week at work never mind doing 4 or 5 loads.

The time saving is not a concern for me as I mostly bung a load in the Auto and find something else to do while im waiting.

Not peeing on your bonfire but if your anything like me the novelty and good intentions of handwashing do soon wear off LOL

Funny how some people love twin tubs and some hate them. My grandma loved hers and really regretted getting and automatic when it died. Her, my Nana and a lot of my Aunties all had twin tubs, the last one getting rid of hers in 1997. Of all of them only my Nana prefers an Auntomatic over her twin tub.

One of my aunts bought an Automatic, had it about a week and took to back to get another twin tub.

"Well I can't be doing with that thing, It throws the wash water away!"

I guess my grandma did handwash for a family of 3, including a baby, for a good few years, with only her Creda Debonair spin dryer. Compared to that a twin tub must have been a Godsend!

Let's see how long the handwashing lasts for

My Mum had twintubs up until i left home at 17 when I bought her an automatic. She always maintained that automatics didn't wash as well until she realised that the people she new with auto's never sorted their laundry. When I lived at home I always did the washing but god how I grew to hate the twintub,I remember plowing through 11 loads on a saturday morning!! How I longer for an Automatic and to spread the loads through the week!

Plus the last supermatic nearly broke my legs!!! The spinner was going at full speed full of sheets, when the axle broke.......the "spincan" smashed round the machine, destroying the cabinet and buckling the wash tub......it gave me quite a fright as you can imagine.

But I must say over the last year or so I have had a longing for a twintub......I nearly bought one when my last machine packed in. The photos in another thread of the supermatic from the 60's took me right back to being a child and Mum showing me how to "wash properly" and you can't beat the smell of a hot sudsy white wash!!!

Different detergents

My mother had tried every soap powder in her Hoovermatic and maintained that nothing cleaned as well as Ariel. She never used gentle detergents on woollens, preferring to use Ariel for everything.

She, her sister-in-laws, her mother and mother-in-law, all maintained that automatics in the 1970s never washed as clean as a twin-tub.

Well Rolls, my mum always used one detergent for everything, she was a tester for Lever Bros ( we lived near Port Sunlight). She used to get various numbered plain boxes of powder and have to rate their performance and send of "test" pillow cases and tea towels to the labs at Lever Bros.

We also used to get loads of mini free samples, I remember the little jif bottles we got and also bottles of Wisk Cold wash liquid ( this wouldve been mid to late 70's ) my Mum was NOT impressed with cold washing!
