Just a question. I think I already know the answer but I don't want to wreck my machine just in case. I have citric acid (powder) from Soap goods I bought a while back...wouldn't this be better than vinegar? How exactly should I do this? Obviously it was need to be mixed with water...but how much citric acid...and how long does it need before running fresh water to rinse it?

Thanks

The care and cleaning instructions for my Davita automatic drip brewer advise to use citric acid and not vinegar.  I can attest that with all of my previous auto-drip machines, the vinegar method required multiple "rinse" cycles compared to citric acid.

I bought some Brew Rite cleaner, thinking it was citric acid, but it's actually sodium carbonate.  The instructions say to use 1 tablespoon for every 4 cups of water.  I don't think it works as well as citric acid.  The machine is taking longer and longer to brew and has started making the out-of-water gurgling sound through the entire brewing cycle.

Based on my experience, citric acid works best but a box of it will cost you more than a few quarts of dollar store vinegar.
