Ok it falls on me to try and build an entertainment cabinet that will house a big 42 inch rear projection tv and try to make it look like it was designed in the 50s 0r 60s, anyone got any ideas?

Measure the TV first
On all sides. Once you get that you can decide just how big it has to be, what will work or fit where you want it or how it should look in the area. Something built out of simple pine stained in a 60's look could work for you.

And put a pediment on top of it that looks like those built in corner china cabinets that were so popular in the 40's & 50's.
