Dettol/Lysol in laundry.

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Lysol used to available here, and was only on sale in chemists, the same stuff you can get in the US, the brown concentrate stuff. My mum and nana used a very small amount in the last rinse, and I heard it was taken off the shelves because it caused skin cancer!!! I doubt it was that serious, but I reckon some people got nasty reactions to it. After that, most people switched to Dettol, which isn't as strong, but it does state on the bottle that it can be used in laundry, and I only put around half a cap full to the last rinse in a twin tub, and a cap full to the last rinse in an auto. Putting it in with the detergent kills the detergent suds and you get a bad wash. TCP is another one that very few people use, and Savlon is also available for disinfecting laundry. I only use it for the clean smell, and I never use it on pet bedding, as it is poisonous to them. Carbolic soap (Lifebouy) used to smell similar to Lysol, and it only available in the afro carribean shops in London, usually made by Carib and Germosol. And yes, a certain ingredient was taken out a few years ago, to stop people with bad rashes, but like all things, it was use for yeas with no problems, same as years ago you never heard of people having problems with eating wheat, or milk etc etc.... I have used Dettol all my life in my wash, and always will, never done me no harm. And yes, I clean with it too! Wish I could get some original Lysol shipped over, missed that stuff. For the UK guys who never used it, it did smell slightly like a watered down Jeyes Fluid.

This is the product I use in our washing and washing at work, gives the clothes a wonderful fresh scent without drowning out the fabric softener. Generally i use it on towels without any fabric softener and they just smell wonderful and fresh and clean. Slight air of eucalyptus about them which is very nice.

If I want a change I also can buy this one, Canesten does a great job, leaves clothes nice and fresh same as the dettol, I can only find the yellow 'lemon' scent around WA but the blue original could be hiding somewhere, never tried it. The yellow leaves a faint scent of lemon but nice and subtle.

Love both these products, they make my washing feel and smell fresh and disinfected, great for your sheets and towels and underwear!

We still have the phenol based Dettol in Australia.

I've got a bottle in the bathroom and it definitely contains Phenol compounds.

We use it for swabbing cuts or scratches, but I'm not fond enough of the smell to use it in washing or as a general purpose cleaner.

The version we have here is called Antiseptic, where as the UK version is called disinfectant. I assume the chemical difference is the reason why.
