Ok
Having been home sick with a massive sinus infection and strep for several days i finally got around to pulling my crap-tastic dura wash BOL 3 cycle whirlpool out and putting in my Kenmore Ultra wash from 2000...
After using for a day i discovered why she got rid of it.. It does work, but mid way through the cycle it will shut off.. If you give the door a whack, it will come back to life, but then shut off again.. Soooo.. Its no great loss... The control bored is bad i think... Not worth fixing to me..

After disucssing it with my roommate, he asked me to get a new dishwasher... So he took me out looking this afternoon..
I have a $25 off coupon for RC Wiley...

Here are the contenders

I had two TOL Frigidaires, and they weren't terible, but they could not handle pots and pans as well as the Maytag or LG I've had since then. Frankly, I'd stay away from Frigidaire dishwashers. There are many better machines out there at decent prices.

I'm used to tall-tub models, and wouldn't go back to a standard tub. I wash a lot of tall stockpots and other large, odd-shaped items. You'll soon get used to how low the bottom rack is to the floor.

Most Whirlpool dishwashers get very good cleaning scores from Consumer Reports, if that's of any help to you.

Dishwashers!

I have a GE tall tub since 2002 - I like it a lot. You will get used to the tall tub after awhile. I used to have a whirlpool power clean portable (sorry I gave it up) - the whirlpool non tall tub you shown above is good but these new ones run in excess of 2 hours. Beware all these new machines run to long (to save energy - what a joke). I know someone with the Frigidaire and it does clean well and easy to load. They have no problems with it but I did hear it isn't the greatest of repair records. Also keep in mind that a lot of the current machines don't offer a digital display. My GE has that I do want to know the cycle progress. Good Luck with whatever decision you make.

Does the Magic Chef have a "Rinse Only" cycle?

BEWARE; I don't think it does.

Personally I like the non tall-tub WP. Had one. It was my favorite DW!

The biggest thing for me is that i have had whirlpools forever and a day and want a change..The magic chef is $85 cheaper with tax

But everytime one changes, well...

So far i hear 2 whirlpool votes..

What can one tell me about maytag..

I have a non-tall tub Kenmore which I'm pretty sure is the same basic mechanicals as the Whirlpool shown. It's probably 10 years old now. I like it a lot and would choose Whirlpool again in heartbeat.

it's worse in hot weather

Quick loading during (or before) say a dinner-party and you don't want your machine to look or smell like someone took a dump in it.

Or you did up a tuna dish/meal, or a stinky ethnic meal and you don't feel like rinsing every piees/dish by hand until a full load is run.

Rinse-only plus an open door until the water evaporates eliminates much DW odor.

My Rinse-only cycle/programme now gets run with detergent immediately preceding a regular wash cycle. It ensurse a double wash and passable results in this gov't mandated "Energy-Star" madness.

Ok now u got me to thinking if i have ever used it.. IF i put smelly stuff in there i run it..I am bad to run it only half full... Hmmm

Sigh.. The whirlpool would match my current kitchen suite... And i know its good...

I have had a ge and it was so so..But the only place that sells them in my budget is Home Depot.. ANd no i wont buy an appliance there..

.
Actually rather than endure 1.5 hours of the DW running "endlessly" I now do 4 "rinse-only" in a row to get

prewash-wash-rinse-rinse

for pots and pans. After the machine does 90% of the work the contents (those that are not dishes or glasses) get a good scrubbing with brillo / S.O.S and ajax / comet cleanser.

Sad that one has to tweak an "automtic" machine to be a semi-automatic in essence to get a work AND a time savings.

BTW my DW is a portable on a rental apt. and I don't leave the water on overnight, nor do I like to run the machine very late at night due to vibration. So t he Rinse-only and the makeshift "rapid wash" do come in useful.

:-)

IMHO mannies should ADD a "prewash" button and a "2nd rinse" button to circumvent the Energy Star "normal cycle" criteria and get their coveted rating, while at the same time adding PERFORMANCE options that are not really optional in the grande scheme of things.

The Magic Chef is a 2006 model and is toward the end of the low-end Maytag tall tub product run. It doesn't have a Risne & Hold (now known as Rinse Only), just light, norma, heavy cycles. Has the low-end Maytag filtering system. Vynic racks. The only difference between the Whirly Du930 & DU945, the 945 has a 4 hours delay wash option and the du935 has a 2/4/6 hour delay option. Vinyl racks.
