Water Saver
mrb627 asked "I noticed that there is a water level or water saver button on the control panel. What does that do?"
Some early GE's had a similar button. It was used for partial loads. You waited until the machine filled with enough water for the size of the load. Pushing the water saver button shut off the water and started the agitation phase of the wash cycle.
(I'm not sure if you had to return to the machine to push the button for the rinse cycle for machines that didn't have an overflow rinse. I would think that machines with an overflow rinse had to fill completely in order for the overflow rinse to work properly.)
