Need some help, hope someone knows their electric motor as I don't. Picked up a used table saw, motor is acting up or bad. Lots of arcing, white and blue sparks, then motor cuts out after 3;0-40 seconds. Pulled the housing off, the commutator where the brushes ride in bad shape. Used tenblondie's suggestion and made a Velcro belt and used an electric drill to rotate the motor as we sanded down the wear on the copper strips. Started rough, as there were high spots, finished off with 800 grit. Brushes are bad, tried to reshape them, it a Rigid saw, but we have to order parts.

Anyway after the last cleaning and assembly it ran worse than when we got it. We cleaned each space between the contacts as they were file with crud, but no luck. Any ideas? Or is the motor toast.....

I would say the motor is likely toast. Probably a couple shorted or broken segments on the armature. Do the brushes fit tight against the armature? I have seen them get stuck in their holders and tear up an armature in a hurry.

Matt,

There's bound to be a place not to far from you that rebuilds electric motors. I don't know how much it would cost but if you really like the saw that's probably the only way to save it, unless it's a really common motor with standard mounts, which probably isn't likely. Unfortunately people don't have motors rebuilt much anymore in our throw away society.

It's just a Ridgid table saw, the type on a cart. We paid $125 for it, news is ~$500. If we can't come up with a cheap way to fix. The motor it will get parted out, odds are for more than we paid.

It would be a nice saw to have, a bit more potable than the large Craftsman I have.
