Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Yes, it's mostly Hobart and that's a plus.  However, it's my understanding that the control panels were notorious for failing, and that replacements are impossible to find.  If that were not the case, I'd own one of those machines.

Ralph,

How many do you want?  I have 4 that you can have...come and get them.

I have never seen one that actually "worked".

The racks are always in great shape...Not to mention the tubs!

From non use!

Everyone that I ever got one from told me if you Unplugged it and plugged it back in it would sometime get through a cycle.

I usually ended up getting them for free.  I would have not taken them otherwise.

Yeah Brent, that's exactly why I run away fast when I see one of them!  Too bad, as I like the look of the panel and the digital readout.  Clearly they didn't do nearly enough testing on that part of the system before going forward with production.

ELECTRONIC KA DWs

The 22s were not as bad as the KDSS-20 and the KDSS-21 these were much more troublesome and more expensive and harder to fix. Appliance electronics were not that well perfected in the late 1970s through much of the 1980s. When MT came out with thier stack laundry machine in 1985 we replaced boards on almost everyone, but at least MT stuck with the same design and worked the bugs out but they still discontinued it in the early 1990s and went to mechanical controls.

Back to the 22s most of our customers got 10-20 years of trouble free service from these before the board failed. Yes this was not nearly as good as the mechanical controlled DWs where the majority of machines never have a control problem before the machine wears out in other major ways. When the control does fail it was very easy to replace on the 22s. But unfortunately the board manufacturer stopped making reasonably priced replacements so you are kinda up a creek if you have one that fails. There are several companies that will attempt to repair these boards if you are inclined to preserve this otherwise neat machine.

trouble free service from these before the board failed

Hey John,

Do you know what portion of the boards fail? Power supply, power filters, resistors/caps, etc? If it is a common component I'm wondering if the boards can be resurrected.

Reminds me of the Neptune boards and the 1990-1992 Oldsmobile Tornado instrument clusters - a simple resistor blows and trashes an otherwise good control board. The trouble I suppose is to find out why the resistor blows. At least we know the source in the Neppies.

I've always wanted a KDSS-22 - very surprised I haven't seen one show up over the last several years locally. It seems almost every dishwasher installed in the Cedar Valley during the 70's and 80's was a KitchenAid.

I know our boy wouldn't wish one of these on anybody!

Damned right :-)

The only time you'll find the words "I recommend you get" and "Selectra" coming out of my mouth is with "a new, working board for that" or "rid of that damned" sandwiched in-between.

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: medium;">Believe it or not there were NOS Boards for this Dishwasher on Ebay not all that long ago.</span>

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: medium;">The seller must have known what he had because he wanted a fortune for them.  </span>

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: medium;">I am sure he still has them.  I have not searched for them in awhile.</span>

Olds Toronado instrument cluster

Funny you mention the Olds Toronado instrument cluster Ben. I had an 89 Toro which had the all digital instrument panel. Bought it mid 90s after graduating high school and drove it through most of my college years. The IP lit up like a Christmas tree at night! Everyone thought I was crazy for buying that car because A.) it was an Oldsmobile and I was 18 and B.) that dash will die and be very expensive to fix. Interestingly, despite all the electronics, I never had a bit of trouble with the dash or any of the electronic components on that car(and boy did it have them). It was basic things like an A/C compressor and power window motors that failed and finally pushed me to sell the car. Try having an R-12 A/C system serviced and recharged in 1999!
