English Electric, Hoover & Rolls Repair clinic Weekend,,,,

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Rolls

This is one of the newest additions and in need of a pump transplant for the spinner. Fortunately I had a donor machine to hand (and Ariston single tub which only cost me 99p) which was not working to supply the pump - which did! For a machine which was very much built down to a price it was great to see it washing and spinning again.

And finally

Naturally there was laundry to be done and, as you can see from Mike's pictures a few machines were put through their paces - which in itself was fun.

But what a joy it is to get together, sharing knowledge, expertise, inspirations, stories and histories - not just of washers but of many topics - as we know only too well we could easily and quite happily spend the whole weekend chatting away but then the sharing is what it is all about :)

Another fantastic

weekend of friendship, great hospitality and repairs.

It was just wonderful to see the english electic wash again, I remember my aunts one back in 1978 or there abouts, they have absolutely no memory of ever having this machine, but funnily enough I remember every detail lol.

I have to admit though, the improvised door boot only lasted the one wash, the movement of the final spin was too much and the two joined gaskets were pulled apart, but it did prove the machine worked including the heater, and that in the absence of the original gasket, we can build on this idea and make something work.

Great to be with you all

Mathew

Hi all.

What a productive weekend of repairs - electra 10500, Keymatic, ee-liberator and more and more and more.

I love the SuperJet, though cannot get my head around Hoover specifying it to be so visually different colour wise to everything else. Maybe that was the reason - to make it different. Looks very bling.

I wonder of a perished door seal was the reason the English Electric was withdrawn from service (sorry - railway speak there). After all that time spent in a garden, it is still willing to do the job. Congrats Mathew of the ingenious door seal get around - as you say, it proved the machine works and now the strategy can be to make the new door seal durable.

Are those new door release handles fitted to the AEG good? I am toying with the idea of getting a couple for my Hotpoint 1826 Liberator, as it has a replacement fitted which feels like it is made of glass. I expect it to break each time it is employed.

Great set of photos - I just curse the fact that we were busy :-(

I'm glad to hear it got through the wash without tripping the electrics, it's a shame it pulled the two halves of the gasket apart. I'm wondering if you could reinforce the clamping by drilling through the two halves and the plastic and fixing it with plastic nuts and bolts without it dripping through the threads. Not sure!

I'd like to think it was more a case of 'Stored (Serviceable)' Lol

What a fantastic team

What a brilliant team and so many restorations completed . Excellent progress to the keymatic .I am always amazed how much ingenuity exists within the team and determination to get the machines working . You all looked like you had a great time missed you all very much . Darren xx

Sorry for the delay

My original post didn't save!

Yes thanks again to Al for his wonderful hosting of this wash in. Or in this case repair in !! It was fun to get so many machines looked at. At one point I didn't know where to look and dipped in and out of several repairs. Darren you were much missed for your technical skills ! It was great to see everyone too.

Rolls Twintub

I've often wondered... what is the reason for the holes on both lids of the machine? Are they there to allow water to be introduced whilst the machine is in operation? i.e. as a rudimentary form of rinsing? Or are they just air vents?

Holes in lids

Hi, the holes in the lids are for opening them, early models didnt have handles. Possibly not a good idea sticking your finger in the wash tub lid hole to open it when boiling the whites .I think the one in your profile picture hasnt got handles. They just added handles and left the holes, less tooling up costs.Nigel.

Even later to the party!!

It was a brilliant weekend to meet up with everyone again and thanks again to Al with his superb hosting and hospitality. He is a marvellous cook and the cheese scones were to die for - as were all the other tasty treats too.

It was great to be able to see and help with the repairs although I was also floating about between them all! Was a bit gutted that we didn't manage to crack the Keymatic but at least we now know what's up with it and hopefully it is easily resolvable and it's good to know it's now watertight and leak free - yippee

I'm stunned by Mathews dedication to the EE. I missed seeing it's maiden wash but what a great idea for the tub gasket. I'm thinking hard for a mark II repair so if I have a brainwave (unlikely) I'll let you know! Truely amazing.

Seeing the Rolls twin tub up and running again made me want a Colston twin tub even more - it's always good to have something a bit different.

Til the next time
S :)

English Electric Liberator

Looking at your efforts with that door seal, I had a thought...

Would a Hoover 'New Wave' door seal fit? I seem to remember that they had quite a depth between the outer shell and the tub assembly.

Hi all,

Looks like great fun was had all around with some fantastic machines being worked on and great weather to do so.

Mathews ingenuity is amazing, I'd never have thought of that myself and although the new boot lasted only one wash, his idea provides something solid to build on and I'm sure with a little work a more permanent seal can be produced. Those EEs having the clamp on the inside of the outer tub is just a massive headache!

Keep up the good work and have fun!

James

Hi Darren

I'm sorry if I've overstepped the mark, I was left with the impression after the progress made by Paul, myself and others back in October that it was a bit of a challenge for all of us and the machine was left at Als for the collective rather than anyone "owning" it, so as it was a bit of a repair weekend, I thought it would be an opportunity to further the start made during the haloween get together, as obviously I'm keen to see this working again and others were busy with other repairs. Following the rinse and spin test, it was put on a wash with the thoughts of seeing if the heater worked or tripped out, it filled and heated so we just let it run. So I would call it a test rather than a first or maiden wash.

So I apologise again, I don't know when I'll be up at Als again, possibly not until the autumn, If you'd rather I didn't do anymore that's fine or maybe we can work together when we meet next.

Rolls, I will look at a new wave boot, but it does have the opening for the fill flume, and remembering the boot fits to a rim on the inside of the outer tub rather than a lip on the front like any other machine I can think of, can you think of one with an internal clamping for the boot, I'm open to suggestions.

Also i don't think your question was answered about the round oven type knob in the centre of the door bowl, it unscrews so extra detergent can be added once the wash is underway, these came out before low suds powders were popular, so rather than over dose, you added the main dose with the load then judged if you needed extra, stopped the machine and using a table spoon you could drop some more in. "Which" said about adding forgotten items through the hole, well you could push a sock etc in but this wasn't its intended use, and 50 plus years before the samsung add wash lol.

And to echo Nigel, my Rolls doesn't have handles on the lids, and from the strain you can hear on the spinner if you run water through the hole, I would think frequent spray rinsing would soon burn out the motor.

Hi Matthew,

I didn't realise further work had been done to it so apologies and thanks are in order in actual fact! :-)

I asked if I could leave it there so that folks could finally see one in person I thought it'd be nice for all to get enjoyment. Sorry if my tone appeared angry I just literally meant I wish I'd seen it and I was in the area that day too! Carry on! I am sure you're getting much pleasure from it with it being on your favourite list!

I hope to see it and everyone soon!

All the best

Darren

Thanks!

After I posted that question about the EE Liberator, I was searching this site's archives and came across "Which?" washing machine and dishwasher reports from the Sixties and Seventies, as posted by Al and Paul. Excellent, excellent reading material!

I noted the detergent porthole explanation in "Which?"- and I too thought 'Samsung Addwash'! Some things never change.

It's a pity that the EE door seal is proving to be such an awkward design. Can no door seal/rubber manufacturer make one from the old one's dimensions?

Repairs and Spares

Another weekend saw me over at Als place finishing up on some repairs after a trip over to Kings Lynn & beyond with MatchBoxPaul to collect machines and spares from Mark Hill our resident genius of all things Hotpoint, especially the top loader rebuilds.

Mark learned his trade form his father Barrie who was a Hotpoint engineer in the 60`s working on all the prototype and newly launched machines, he then formed a service business with his son Mark and have been supplying schools, colleges and homes throughout the area with renovated and machine repairs to date. Alas Mark and Ali are moving to Gozo for a new life, our loss , their gain. Mark has supplied spares to many of us over the decade and has also been able to machine obsolete parts to keep our machines working, and in many cases made better workarounds that the original parts for our benefit, Many of the Hotpoint top loaders have had complete refurb / re-builds allowing them to carry on working for our washrooms

"All The Best" to you Mark in your new venture and "Many Thanks" for all the help and support over the years. pic is Mark & Dad complete with his ERF truck.[this post was last edited: 5/12/2017-09:41]
