The notch allows for airflow. If there was no notch, and the end of the crevice tool sealed tight to the surface....there would be no air flow and consequently no suction.

Reduced Suction
Well I'll be dipped. Based on the suction power of this thing, that's the first thought I had. Even without using any attachments, the open end of the wand was getting stuck to everything.

I think my sister will like this machine. I would wager that her friend up the hill can fix her up with a bare floors attachment and who knows what else.
If I wasn't in love with my Sebo, I'd keep the 1746.

If the hose fits into the exhaust port then yes it can blow.
