Maybe a power surge caused your appliances to go faulty, maybe the plug? Or an electrical connection. But I think you'd be better off replacing it if it's an internal thing, as something has exploded and there is a burning smell, it may not be fit to use, not to mention with todays day and age, many appliances are designed to go on the skip after a couple of years. Obviously if it is the plug then just replace the plug.
